Mike Tyson admitted he was headbutting Evander Holyfield first so Holyfield said he kept headbutting him back I guess when he realised the headbutts didn't have the desired effect he changed tactics.
Tyson’s less often heard excuse is that rather than hearing Lane instruct “Let’s get it on”’he thought he heard Mills say “Let’s chow it down”. Bad joke? Maybe. But perhaps so bad that it bottoms out only to bounce itself back up into the realm of good, right? No? Okay, just bad. Got it.
I was only a teenager but was thoroughly disappointed by the outcome of this fight. Couldn’t believe Tyson could be so dirty. But as I have become more seasoned formed a slightly different view - I think his eye was still well and truly in the fight and he was landing some decent combinations. He should have stuck it out and I think he may have won. Oh well. I wish the Heavyweight landscape of today was only a fraction as exciting as it was back then. At least the best fought one another regularly. I miss the 80s/90s boxing matchups.
He went crazed because everything he was good at turned out to be ineffective against the slickness of Evander. Probably he never felt that helpless before and after.
It’s always funny to see Tyson fans complain about Evander being dirty … in a fight where Mike TWICE bit the guy’s ear (and taking a chunk out of it). Not to mention all the times Mike tried to break an opponent’s arm or commit other illegal acts. Go look at the Ruddock fights and you’ll run out of fingers and toes counting Mike’s repeated fouls. But Mike’s always gotta be a victim and always got to have an excuse, lol.
It was a real shock at the time - perhaps not as much of one relative to the realm of Mike’s world but still crazy…..I agree though that the HW division was much compelling in those decades than it is now…the most people can get excited about is Fury talking about fighting Usyk…forget about him actually getting into the ring with him…
Frustration. A man he couldn't intimidate mentally or physically ...... He did what most bullies do when they do run into that man.... Find away out.
I think you hit the nail on the head. Tyson needs to find some dominance in a fight or he falters. Holyfield was beating Tyson thoroughly and Tyson doesn't perform well when he's losing. He never got a foothold on Holyfield, and became extremely frustrated, this isn't even to mention the headbutting Tyson alleges Holyfield did but I cannot recall if thats true. its been awhile since i watched the tape of their fight.
