Break it down in slow motion. Throw your jab, step slightly to the left throw the hook. Practise moving back and firing a counter. Just slowly break it down. Watch Bernard Hopkins and pay close attention to his feet, the little steps and then try them yourself.
shadow box in a full-length mirror so you can see your feet. if you're trying to improve your footwork dont even concentrate on your hands, just watch your feet. if your throwing a hook, make sure you move your feet accordingly etc. throwing a counter jab, just watch your feet take a tiny step back and then straight back in with the jab. if you feel your feet are getting too far apart, i just turn sideways and watch the distance between my feet as i throw combos moving forward, backward or sideways, ive never used a rope to tie my feet together..
Boxing is about balance. If you are off balance you can't turn your body into a punch to generate power. If you are off balance and you get hit, you are more likely to go to the canvas. So, the first thing about footwork is that you should ALWAYS be on balance when punching, moving and taking punches. The second thing about footwork is that you should be able to move in and out of punching range and angles while maintaining that balance. Guys with great footwork, like Mike Tyson, can slip punches and move into a position that cuts off the ring for the opponent and that also puts them into a position where they can punch while their opponent is "out of position", and can't punch them without resetting his feet or moving. Another example is Hopkins. He is able to minimize the damage of incoming punches by maintaining proper distance with great footwork. Also, its not luck that BHop is always in a position to land great counter punches. Footwork and reflexes get him in those places.
Good footwork is about variation and control, the whole point in any boxing footwork or stance is to ensure a maximum variation of movements at all times during, before and after the execution of any of the movements or strikes you will use while boxing, good economy of speed, power and overall energy will also be included in all of this and ingrained into the style, thats if the style your being taught is worth a ****.
How to train it? Shadow Boxing! It allows you to fully engage your brain on your feet without your lungs and arms screaming at you. Also tons of side to side skips, jumping jacks, and punching jacks? Like a jumping jack but feet go front to back and arms pump like punching or rotate like hooks.
