There's a bit in four kings about duran never liking hearns and getting all prickly whenever he was around.

Yes there is. He went quiet around him apparently. Its out of character to see him wanting to touch gloves with Hearns every 30 seconds during the fight also

It took place four years after the optimal moment for Duran to take him on, and when they were both ten pounds heavier than they would have been in 1980. Duran came in overconfident and having partied like crazy after Hagler. Tommy was coming in off decisions over Sutherland, Minchillo and Benitez, and no longer seemed the killer everybody considered him as after what he did to Pipino. The circumstances in June 1984 were radically different from what would have been the case in late 1980. Duran turned 34 the day after Hearns, a far cry from 29 for him. Tommy was peaking in June 1984, while the slower and less elusive El Cholo was clearly past prime. Hearns was still pre peak in 1980, while Roberto was just slightly past peak. Again, Duran-Hearns in 1980 may have been very different from Hearns-Duran in 1984.

Henry Armstrong vs Aaron Pryor. That would be one of "those" fights.. unbelievable number of punches landed from both sides, with not much of a letup in the action.

Duran seemed disrespectful as usual in the pre-fight talk atleast. He thought Hearns was nothing but hype and felt he had been "exposed" by Leonard. The first round certainly taught him to respect Hearns's power, but it was too late by then. He was fighting a bigger, faster and more powerful man who was as focused as ever to take Duran out in order to make a statement. It was one of those fights that proves a fighter's greatness, and power. There was no doubting Hearns's ability after blasting out a man who had gone 15 rounds with Hagler in his previous fight.

Now, this may be all-important in a 1980 Duran-Hearns WW unification where Tommy had yet to be "exposed" by SRL. With Hearns-Cuevas fresh in everybody's minds, what kind of chance is there that Roberto does not fully respect Tommy's power right from the contract signing? El Cholo would be on high alert the instant a commitment is made for a title for title showdown.
