A name that a keyboard warrior gives to a grown man who fights for a living who they deem to be sub-par.
My definition of a bum would probably have to be someone who lacks heart, someone who's a quitter. Or someone used as a stepping stone to progress a prospect. I don't think I've called anyone a bum in a long time though, I try not to use that word. That's how majority uses it.
I guess it would of became a popular word when used in connection to boxing due to it's use in the Rocky movies. Very few on here who use the word to describe a boxer have the right to, unless you've been into a boxing ring at the same level the guys you call a bum operate at
I don't like using the word. But if I had to, I would use it to describe a fighter people that follow boxing haven't even heard of. Guys like Salka, Mcnueely, and Richard Frazier(guy who Roy Jones fought). Still though using the word to describe guys who step into that ring just seems wrong. Anybody who has had even an amateur fight knows that it takes a lot of courage to get in there.
Much more severe than a lot of people on here, who seem to attribute it to:1. anyone outside the top 30 or 40 of their division or 2. anyone who just lost a fight. A real bum is someone outside the top 100 in the HW's, somewhat lower (60ish) in other divisions. I'd rank it like this, at least for HW's: 1 Champion 2-10 top contenders 11-20 contenders 21-40 fringe contenders 41-60 top journeymen 61-100 journeymen lower: various classes of bum That said, people forget that even "bums" are some of the best in the world at what they do. People need to ask themselves if they are one of the 200 best in the world in their job before they get too harsh with "bums"
My old coach & trainer summed it up exactly. One of the guys in gym called fighter who had just lost a fight a bum. Charlie said " Hey kid one question Could you beat that guy"?? Guy says " No of course not Why"?? Charlie said" Well in that case you've got no right to use that term to insult him" " If you fight him and beat him you may have a case so do not let me hear you use that term again OK" ??
