What could Bruno have done to win the first fight?

I think all of the guys that challenged Tyson should have had more competitive warm up fights than they did in the lead up to meeting Tyson. Apart from Douglas, hardly any of them did.

Everyone was parked up in limbo waiting for a shot at Tyson. Spinks, Bruno, Holmes all had not fought for a long time. Bruno, Thomas and Tubs had not defeated live opponents for years.

In another era Tyson would have met Tucker or Biggs and Douglas before meeting Berbick.

Tubs and Thomas would have met each other before challenging Tyson. Larry would have had to have met Biggs first.

Instead all these guys went into the ring naked against Tyson. They were seriously disadvantaged.

And the lack of fighting a live contemporary before challenging Berbick ultimately left Tyson not battle hardened enough to cope with a live guy like Douglas.

 

Bring a gun into the ring!

 

Frank Bruno would have had to psyche Tyson out just before the fight by running him over with a car in the arena parking garage.

 

He doesn't have the stamina the timing, skills or footwork to be competitive.

 

Terry Lawless has to be questioned here as well. Where was the uppercut ?

 

As the saying goes, it's all about levels. To quote the late Harry Mullan, " Bruno's best was not good enough for Tyson's worst ".
