I say he was tagging Margo at will in the begining but was doing it off the back foot and not commiting and setting down on his shots. I say he gave Margo too much respect early. The body punching has been also mentioned, he should have found a way.

By moving back and letting Margo chase him to the ropes Cotto was letting Margo gain momentum and do the only thing he could do chase and throw.

Cotto needed to box no doubt, but his offense is his defense and it should have been at times vs Margo. What do you guys think Cotto should have done(besides clinch) differently to win this fight?

Cotto shouldn't have planted his feet and thrown so many combinations, he should have thrown singles and doubles and gotten out. And he shouldn't have ever stopped against the ropes for longer than a second or two, at any point. He could have done that differently. Cotto needed to be much more dynamic to have a chance.

Nothing because Margarito just can't be hurt. Margarito is still going to walk Cotto down.

everyone gets hurt even Margo dont believe the Hype once you have watched boxing enough you will know this, example: if a guy like Gene Fullmer can be KO'D by one punch. No one is KO proof.

Well, you saw what happened when Margarito was catching up to Cotto. As soon as Margarito started making contact in the exchanges Cotto was not liking it. Also, Cotto has shown the tendency to start backing up when his opponent will keep coming forward, throughout his career. He set into moving backward immediately just knowing Margarito would keep coming. Cotto seems to have a mental aversion to being hunted, he seems extremely uncomfortable with it. I think that's something that a fair number of people picking Margarito seemed to grasp before the fight. The whole psychology aspect was heavily in Margarito's favor.

yeah but he can be outboxed.

he should have kept moving, he went toe to toe with Margo to much.

and you said besides clinch but that would have helped him alot obviously.

I was thinking about that. Cotto doing his thing in Puerto Rico might not give him that extra bit of endurance he needs. I know De La Hoya was going to switch his camp from Puerto Rico back to Big Bear for the Mayweather rematch.

I say the body punching of course and with a tough guy like Margo you may have to do more moving and pop shotting because unless you knock him out you have to be able to go 12 rounds with a guy pressuring you and will need some energy in your tank for those late rounds.

    Stay away from the ropes

Cotto took most of his damage whenever Margarito cut him off.

Good because the amount of bufoons and aggravating nimwits here is really annoying, its why a great poster like ACB left the forum and greats like Sal Sanchez and Manassa only post in the Classics.

Its good to at least have posters who are objective and have a firm grasp on reality regardless of who they pull for in a fight. Look foward to exchanging ideas wether they differ or are similar regardless for the upcoming fights. Take care.
