If Michael Watson hadn't suffered the kd against eubank which led to the horrific ending. If Watson had successfully out pointed him so picking up the wbo super middle belt. What would be the result s of these fights?
A rematch with Nigel Benn who was on the comeback trail and close to winning the wbc title?
A unification with wbc champion mauro galvano?
A unification with IBF champ darrin van horn?
A fight with top contender for wbo title sugar boy malinga?
A fight with IBF top contender Iran barkley?

Benn had improved alot since moving to super middleweight, I thought he beats eubanks in the rematch. I expect a late stoppage for Benn, if he could weather the storm against mcclellan then could handle watson well.
I don't know anything about mauro galvano.
Watson is likely to beat Darrin Van Horn, purely on his better resume.
Malinga is tough choice. I like the guy very much cuz he always seemed to get bamboozled in his big fights. Watson SD decisions.

I've often wondered about what Watson could have go on to achieve.

Not sure about how a Benn rematch would have gone. A 50/50 one. A third fight with Eubank would have been on the cards too. So would a second fight with Mike McCallum.

Would loved to have seen a Benn rematch Stevie. I actually think it would be a great fight that would end in a late stoppage by Watson. A rematch with McCallum would result in a split Dec loss for Michael, a much tougher match this time around. A rubber match with Eubank?? Could be another scorcher. Watson keeps on top and pushes eubank to the max, dropping him twice and winning a decision. A good match up would be Watson v barkley. Can see Watson showing his full range of skills against Iran and breaking him down. Covering up and countering against the barkley s huge punches. Stopping the blade some time in the tenth.

I disagree about Benn, Max. I think he lost some of his edge at the higher weight. The Eubank he drew with was a lesser fighter than the Eubank who Watson fought. I think Watson, a naturally bigger man, would have handled Benn with ease. Because Nigel was less gung ho at SMW, it takes longer but is equally as comprehensive. I put an asterisk next to how Nigel did against McLellan. Two, in fact. Firstly he was kayoed in the first round. And secondly, McLellan was reputed to be damaged goods before that fight and his corner and personal life were in disarray. It was a great fight, that said.

Galvano was nothing special, with all due respect, and Watson would have been too big, and too skilled, for Van Horn who was a junior middle to begin with.

Malinga fought Eubank and Benn after their near fatal bouts. Neither was the man they had been when Michael fought them. Watson would have shown he was a level above Sugar Boy. I think Michael wold have kept going until Toney moved up early 93. That ends in defeat for Michael but no shame there. 1993 James Toney was as good as it gets.

I think being beaten by McCallum showed us Watson's level.

Not quite, Mac, imo. It only showed he wasn't as good as McCallum. There's a whole lot of room beneath that level. And none of the guys in the OP's post were anywhere near McCallum's level, either. In fact, I think they were much further away from it than Watson was.

I think he would beat benn again at super middleweight just think he had Nigels number.Van horn would be brushed aside in a few rnds .Galvano go's the distance but loses .Blade gets stopped late in a good fight.sugar boy go's on points in dull contest. If he fought differently and Mcullam he could possibly win but would be tough I also think Sumbu Kalumba would probably beat Watson .A fight with Collins would be great and could go either way .Michael would do well till he ran into Toney he gets beat that night .

Think toney would dismantle Watson afraid to say. To vicious and a great deal better than most Watson met.

Michael Watson was quite the gentleman in contrast to those uncouth
oafs Benn and Eubank who seemed to have passed this to their sons.
Micheal Watson MBE your prime was cut too short sir.

Absolutely jup. I have said before that when Michael got injured I had to avoid the radio for months. I was terrified he might have died. Thank God there was no internet then. I'd have been a wreck!

Not keen on Benn but can't compare him to the Eubanks - English and Chris. Why call yourself English to avoid confusion? Why not give him a different name to begin with? Utter prat.

Watson is on a par with Ezzard and Patterson for me. Prince among men.

Also. Why is he only an MBE? That marathon may have been the single most inspiring thing I ever saw.

Malinga schooled Benn the first time they fought as well which was years before the McCllelan fight.

The Super Middileweight division in the early 90s sure stacked with talents. Benn, Eubanks, Watson, Toney, RJJ, Barkley, Nunn, even lesser fighters like Malinga is still damn good.

Nice post Eddie. Was a bad time for boxing back then. Michael was lucky to come out of that with his life. A lovely fella.
