I'm talking about Holyfield 1 of course.
He lost both fights and let's be honest, conclusively, but is there any thing differently he could have done, to actually have a chance of winning either?

Boxing is whatever % mental, i dont think he was mentally prepared for and willing to engage in a tough fight either time.
Especially not against Holyfield, he tried to quit in that fight with the cut/headbutt in the 7th round i believe.
Holyfield wanted it more. And douglas, atleast that night also.
So whatever you want to say about his technical erosion after the split with rooney or his physical shape or lack thereof. The mental part was the most significant. He was mentally shot after Jail.

The thing about the douglas fight is even though douglas was winning most of the rounds tyson did come really close to winning, he only needed to be 5% better to knock douglas out because he was real close with a few big shots that could have ended the fight. You cant say that about the holyfield fight, he never would have gotten evander out with one big shot or one big combination. He needed to win a war.

Bottom line is if youre knocking everybody out and youre going through the entire training camp without visualizing that its gonna be hard, that you might be hurt, youre not gonna be ready to face adversity when something goes wrong.

In the case of Buster Douglas, I think Mike Tyson would beat him nine out of ten times anyway, so I am saying in order to beat him, Mike just had to get Buster in the ring again. As for Evander Holyfield, I do not see Mike Tyson beating him. I think Evander had his number.

Good analysis but I think Buster does better than 1 in 9.

In 1990, Mike Tyson should have trained properly, had a "hunger" for triumphs like years before. When he went to Japan, he should have slept properly, not drank alcohol, not spent himself on Japanese ladies, not gotten into such a shape that his training partner would knock him down...and thus he would have defeated James Douglas. Thus, in the next fight against Holyfield in 1990, he would also defeat him.

No, his style simply isn't that dominant, despite his speed and power - some elusivemovement and he's lost. And that's what happened.

Trained harder. Stayed focused. And not going to prison and losing 4 years of his career would have helped.

Oh common, Swag. If I were a champion surely there must be a way to incorporate banging Japanese hookers into a healthy lifestyle !?!?. I don’t think I could give that up

Boxing fans are uniquely strange in this aspect. In other sports I follow (which is loads) if there are two players similar in peak ability, but Player A's prime is 3 years, and Player B's prime is 10 years, then Player B is better by default.

Only in boxing do people say "This 30 year old would have destroyed this 35 year old if the 30 year old was in his 20's".

??? Who's fault is it Mike fell off immediately lmao. Why does Mike get credit for being worse at boxing over the course of his career.

Same with people that said Mayweather "aged Manny Pacquiao out" like Mayweather isn't older with a similar amount of rounds not his fault he aged better wtf.

I bet the Truth William's was pissed off that his chance wasn't six months later. Mike was a train wreck in the late 80s
Massive wealth at a young age is difficult to cope with
