What coursed the stoppage of Benvenuti in the second Monzon-fight?

Was Al Silvani Nino`s chief second?

One of the legendary trainers from Stillman`s Gym. I know he was with Benvenuti and I believe led him to the title. I don`t see him in the corner here though.

Both of Scotts stoppages against Monzon and Benvenuti were ****. The Benvenuti one was worse but both were ridiculous. Fraser Scott was literally DQd against Benvenuti for ducking and slipping punches. Can you imagine that? "You either have to let our fighter punch you in the face or you lose..." Against Monzon he was losing but the fight shouldnt have been stopped. It was worse than the Moyer stoppage which caused a major scandal in Europe.

Yes that's right. Scott claimed in his book that by that point, he had basically had it with boxing and he wasn't getting along well with his trainer Joe West. He probably exaggerated a rib injury as an excuse to stop the fight.

It is a great book by the way. I re-read it every couple of years.

Right on - get it straight on the Monzon fight. I am a big fan of Monzon. He was a great boxer and he did not need help to beat Scott.
I always wondered how he could become a murderer. He was blamed for the murder of his wife. But the case showed it was a terrible accident. But he never lived to tell his story.

He was a legandary trainer and he was not Nino´s chief second at that time.
Al Silvani was the trainer and chief second of Tom Bogs, the Danish contender. Tom Bogs boxed in a straight up European style and manager Mogens Palle took over Al Silvani in order to change Bogs´style. It did´nt work well for the Dane. He looked very good against Don Fullmer and Art Hernandez. But British MW Bunny Sterling outboxed him. Then in 1972, Carlos Monzon gave Bogs the chance to capture the title. Bogs did pretty well the first three rounds. Silvani had told him to move his upper body like Graziano and attack Monzon as often as possible. It worked well and going in to the 4th round, Bogs was in front. Then a cut gave a Monzon a kick. Monzon knew he could be stopped by cut in a Danish arena with a Danish doctor in charge, and he started to counterattack Bogs. From then on it was only a matter of time before the fight was over. Bogs had an iron jaw, was down 5 times before Harry Gibbs, in the 5th round saved Bogs from more punishment. Years later, Tom Bogs admitted that Silvani confused him more than he guided him. He said, he wished he had fought Monzon in his straight-up European style because he felt he could put more power behind punches from that stance. He never claimed he could have beaten Monzon. But he thinks his chances would have been better.

IN my opinion the bottom line is Nino, who was never the most dedicated guy on the planet and quiet a European playboy, realized he wanted no part of that monster ... that was that ..

I have the Fraser Scott fight and he did not pull out of it. The bout was stopped by the referee. Between the second and third rounds Argentine officials swarmed his corner. When the bell rang for the third Scott came out ready to fight and squared off with Monzon. Just as the two fighters were about to start punching the referee came between and was holding both fighters back for a few seconds. Scott was clueless and the audience was booing. The referee then grabbed Monzon's hand and raised it. Scott started to work his way around the ref to continue fighting and then started arguing with the ref and an official off camera. When Monzon was announced the winner after the bout he was booed. Id post a pic but ESB no longer allows pics. Like I said, it wasnt as bad a stoppage as the Benvenuti because Scott was mostly on the defensive in the second round but he wasnt badly hurt.

As for Monzon's murder of his wife get it right. Accident my ass, he was known to brutally beat her on a regular occasion even before they were married. She used to show up with bruises all over her body. The guy was a monster.

Also, Boggs did not look good for his fight with Don Fullmer. He did almost nothing and got a gift draw.

It helps to have actually seen these fights rather than spout hero worship.

Yeah, ringside seats and you win all arguments - but it still does´nt help to ignore the facts:
Tom Bogs - Don Fullmer, february 12 1970 was declared a draw. Tom Bogs was outboxed and but the Italian referee saw it even. But Fullmer had clearly won at least 6 rounds out of 10.
A year later on february 11, with Al Silvani in his corner, Tom Bogs won a clear 10 round decison, outboxed and outpunched Don Fullmer. Don Fullmer acknowledging the loss: "Bogs has the potentiel to become World Champion", he said.

You may have seen the fight but I looked at Scott's book again and in his account of the fight, he states he had taken some hard shots to the ribs from Monzon so was in some pain but he acknowledged he refused to fight anymore

In the corner, with the doctor and referee watching, he was debating with Joe West on whether he could continue and this is what he wrote, quoting directly from the book:

"Can yah go another?" Joe West asked me harshly. More faces joined in my corner.

I blinked rapidly, tasting the poison in my mouth. "No!" "I whispered hoarsely. "It's killing me!"

That was it. I had lied to Joe West like I had never lied before. The other lies could be called courageous, as I tried to fend for myself. But this was a dark and ugly one, a lie from a coward who refused to fight any longer.

I heard the bell ring and saw Monzon stand up and approach me. People then started waving their arms and screaming. Monzon had won.

Joe West was emotionless now. It was if he knew his prizefighter has just bagged out. I found it hard to face him. He led me back to the dressing room slowly.

    Interesting.

Sometimes fighters lash out at their trainers after a loss. From what I understand the boxing press in Italy didn`t like some of the changes that Silvani made to Nino`s style though it they saw it eventually was effective.

I remember the classy Alexis Arguello blaming Eddie Futch after his loss to Aaron Pryor. That one suprised me but it happened.

Thats an interesting account but it in no way resembles what actually happened other than the faces in the corner. I can tell you over and over the sky above me is green but if its actually blue who are you going to believe? What Im telling you or your eyes? Scott absolutely, categorically did not quit in his corner against Monzon. Period. The bell rang, he got up and squared off with Monzon before the referee stepped in and held the two apart. The referee then raised Monzon's hand. Monzon was booed after the fight. Those are indisputable facts. Id love to sit with Scott and have him read his version while I play the film of the fight. He wouldnt be able to.
