Calzaghe views Dawson as someone who doesn't have the credentials to step in the ring with him. IMO he needs to fight either Glen Johnson or Tavoris Cloud. Dawson had a controversial win against Johnson and many critics feel like needs to clean that up. Cloud is the mandatory for the IBF title, probably the hardest hitter in the LHW division, if Dawson beats him he can silence his critics that he can beat a puncher. I don't think Calzaghe is going retire right away so there is no need for Dawson to rush and fight him. Dawson needs to let Calzaghe know that he's legit and for real, a win against either these two will prove that.
Joe's a pretty young 37, he might still have some drive. Boxing is a tough game to quit, when you have the drive like Hopkins, you can stay around. If he doesn't then he should retire, but if he has the drive why not fight and collect a payday while at it.
never mind I just saw this link in the other topic. http://blog.nj.com/ledgerboxing/2008/11/calzaghe_ponders_future_after.html If Calzaghe wants the fight I know HBO will help push for the fight, even though Dawson is a Showtime fighter.
Everybody even HBO, Showtime, and Gary Shaw wants to push for a Dawson-Calzaghe match, which would be the logical thing to do if Calzaghe wants it.
the way i see it.... Dawson already has his attention, Calzaghes acknowledged him....the sport has acknowledged him, and the fans have acknowledged him but if he doesn't take the fight, it's just a thing of timing.......if he really wants to retire, theres no shame in that but if he truly decides to keep fighting and doesn't fight chad, i'd lose some respect for him, as would most boxing fans but whether he does fight him or retires, it's good for chad dawson.... they fight, chad beats him.....he's the undisputed LHW champion of the world if they dont fight, he retires.......who else is there who's a threat to dawsons throne?.....Bhop?, that leads to great fight that i think chad would win, and beating Bhop #4 p4p fighter in the world would probabbly do alot more for his career then beating calzaghe in the eyes of the american public, he'd probably be a boxing superstar so yeah.....if Joe retires, i'm happy and congrats on the career if joes decides to stick around and fight chad, then he's got alot of heart and alot balls, either way i'm not mad at him, and either way both fighters pretty much benefit
there is only 1 way that shaw (dawson) can grab calzaghe`s attention. offer calzaghe $10,000,000 calzaghe already has a $7,500,000 offer on the table from team froch that is contingent on froch beating pascal i would have thought. gary shaw is going to have to lose a lot of money on the fight in order to get his man`s name in the spotlight and buy the status for dawson IMO for this fight realistaclly to take place.
Carl Froch? There is so many reasons why Calzaghe shouldn't be fighting him. First off Carl Froch has very little skills, the only reason why he wins fights is because of his toughness, power, and the opposition he faced. Any skilled boxer with a good chin could beat Froach. Froch has fought no one and Jean Pascal will be his toughest opponent, a fight I predict he will lose.
it is about money team froch has come up with a number. team dawson will have to come up with a larger number. it has absolutley nothing to do with abilty of the respective fighters it is simply economics.
Dawson needs to prove that he's the man in my opinion. A close win over Johnson and a win over Tarver are not enough to put him in Calzaghe's bracket. At this point in his career Calzaghe wants names and the way I see it is that there is nobody left for him to fight - Dawson included. Any fight which Joe takes now would be a step down. Retirement is the right option in my opinion.
