Canelo is a light heavyweight on fight night. He weighed 172lb against Trout on fight night.

 

I'm one of those that gives him credit for Mosley, since it was not known he was washed up in advance. So I'll grant you your exhibit A. But Ortiz Maybe had Ortiz continued to win, but what are the chances of that? Do you Ortiz has 0 top 10 wins in any division at a regulation weight? He's 1-3-1 vs such comp, with his only win coming at a catchweight

Here, I'll venture a guess. His 1st fight vs Pac was fairly traumatic, he gave up on winning before round 6 and it was one long desperate almost escape. OTOH he totally underestimated Trout, probably drunk on his Floyd "success". He forgot why he'd asked Marg for a 150 CW in the first place, and got a rude awakening fight night

 

So then how can you also say he avoided all challenges over the last 6yrs?

Ortiz beat Nate Campbell, Lamont Peterson, and Andre Berto all after losing to Maidana. He only had one legit loss to Maidana before he fought Mayweather and that was almost 3yrs prior. He brought size, decent speed, decent boxing ability, major power, youth, aggressiveness and was a south paw. His major flaw was he didn't have heart, though he showed major improvement in that category vs Berto.

The fight was actually getting good until that bull **** happen.

 

I never said he avoided all challenges, maybe biggest challenges. And cmon, Campbell was a garbage win. He was washed up and brought in as Vic's comeback fight, and made Vic look gunshy. I may have had Vic over Peterson by 2 pts, not sure, but I remember him getting schooled after he couldn't put him away early. He may have eeked it out, but came off like a clueless frontrunner, well proven since.

 

I was just pointing out that he wasn't 1-3-1 vs top 10 guys in his division. Campbell was supposed to be washed up vs Diaz as well and we all know what happen there. Peterson was caught as a drug cheat so im not sure if I can say Peterson was better then what most expected. All the gun shy talk ended with the Berto fight.

The thing is Ortiz brought things to the table that could trouble Mayweather, like size, power, youth, aggressiveness, south paw stance. There is no perfect fighter out there. Margarito has 4 losses and lost c level fighters. But ppl felt that Margarito brought things to the table that could trouble Mayweather. There is no telling if Margarito is a bigger challenge to Mayweather then Ortiz only perception. Margarito has a stronger chin but doesn't have one punch KO power. Ortiz has more one punch KO power and better all around boxing skills and movement. There is no telling if Margarito was more of a challenge then Mosley. Mosley brought more speed and more power and better all around boxing abiliy. Margarito brought more size and stamina. And the only reason why the perception is there is because they never fought. If they would have fought Margarito would be looked at as a c level fighter who Mayweather would be getting the same level of credit that he gets for Hatton, Hoya, Mosley, Ortiz and that's little. **** Margarito isn't even a hall of famer. Instead Baldomir since nobody would have the visual of Baldo getting beat easy the perception would be there and Paul Williams would be the new boogeymen.

 

Campbell was scheduled for a comeback fight for a reason. And i doubt Peterson was on PEDs at that point given that he went up like 9lbs fight night for his very next . In fact Ortiz was 9lbs heavier that night, and when he found he couldn't blow him out, he was out of ideas. I agree he has nice attributes, but that's not worth much at the highest level in boxing if your intangibles are that bad.

 

If Guerrero pulled a Cotto and claimed he wasn't ready for Mayweather. Then went on a 4-5 fight win streak pulling fights like he did vs Berto building his hype and entertainment. Perception would be he is the new boogyman. Until the fight were to get signed that is.

 

Like I said there is no perfect boxers. Everyone has flaws somewhere. If Mayweather doesn't fight you your flaws are hidden and your attributes are promoted. If Mayweather fights you your flaws are promoted and your attributes are hidden. That's the way it works.
