What determines how strong or weak a fighter's chin will be? Is it just a mental state? Roy Jones was shot mentally after getting KO'd by Tarver, and his chin weakened. Or is it genetics? Chavez Jr. has an iron chin, just like his father, while Ronald Hearns has a weak chin, like his father.
to dertermine how good a chin is the fighter HAS to be exposed to many countless clean flush shots in his career its not if he goes down or not because anyone can go down with the fight shot for example fighter A has taken 3 or 4 flush shots in his career and never went down but fighter b has taken 100 flush shots but has gone down its clear any adult would say fighter b has a better chin because he has been exposed to far more clean flush shots and has taken them also some figther go through there careers relying on there chins rather then using defense. people still need to attend chin school
Also, punch resistance can deteriorate. Chisora got rocked more easily after getting stopped by Haye. If you listen to the Chincheckers, any fighter who gets rocked, floored, or KO'd has a glass jaw.
It depends on the substance said chin is made of. It could be made out of eggshells, glass, granite, iron, adamantium etc. Am I doing this right?
Foundation. A fighter with a strong foundation can withstand more punishment. Weight is a huge factor, drained fighters cannot withstand as much punishment. Neck muscle, which is why you see some fighters working out their neck to make it stronger. Mentality and deterioration. Punch resistance fades when you get hit too much or KO'd or whatever.
Weight issues are to do with hydration really if a fighter is drained / sick at the weight he'll have less fluid protecting his brain. That's how I understand it at least. Neck muscles are a big part of it, see Tyson. Probably having a short neck would help as well? I would bet a giraffe is chinny compared to a bull. Im not sure mentality has an influence, if your clock gets punched attitude wont effect the outcome.
