What did RJJ lack that Ali had?

I'm not trying to offend you, but that last statement sent the sound reasoning in the previous statements out the window.

I'd check the residence of anyone who ranks Jones above Ali, half-suspecting that they live in Bizarro-world.

 

I'd never be so bold as to claim I didn't live in Bizarro-world.

Ali had two things Jones lacked. 1..A solid jaw , Ali could take a shot Jones couldnt.
2... Cajonnes. Ali took on all comers, Jones jr picked his opponents

 

What did RJJ lack that Ali had? How 'bout a CHIN for starters. Also, RJJ didn't have as effective a contingency plan, that is an alternate style of fighting when the ol' reflexes let him down like Ali had. And I agree with an earlier post, he lacked Ali's sense of humor, and broad appeal to the masses.

 

Ali could take a punch much better than Jones, but I think the main difference between Ali and any other fighter besides RJJ are his reflexes.

No other fighter in heavyweight history or boxing history, has the reflexes of Ali, which makes his hand and footspeed that much faster to the opponent. I don't argue with those who suggests RJJ's handspeed was faster than Ali's, remembering that Ali is a natural heavyweight, RJJ is tweener middleweight/lightheavyweight.

Both Sugar Rays, Robinson & Leonard may be compared to Ali in terms of reflexes and overall speed.

 

The stupid, or perhaps sad thing is that Jones has taken quite some punishment during his fights post-Tarver (and perhaps while preparing for them - i think a great deal of Ali's damage was done in training as well). If only he'd taken more risks during his prime and retired after the Tarver rematch, he'd end up as healthy as he is but the greater fighter.

 

I don't think Ali can be compared to Jones in overall speed... Reflexes yes but I still think Roy had the faster reflexes. This thread has dismissed Roy's chin, so credit must be given to the reflexes, being how he was only dropped once untill he was 34.

Virtually everything. Ali was great, Jones Jnr was not.

 

I didn't realize winning titles in 4 weight classes and winning fairly easily until you were 34 became run of the mill. :huh

 

1 thing Jones did lack was a great rival on his own level. People weren't rating Ali as truly great until the Foreman fight and Frazier rubber, that cemented his legacy. Jones didnt lose properly until he was what? 35? 36? There wasn't an heir apparent around from 168-175 to make a super fight with

 

Oh, there was a great rival for him in DM, sadly both didn´t want the fight.

DM was a top rival, but it was hard to sell him as a top rival on US TV. Should have happened, but both didn't want/need it enough.
