Local media would explain 10,000 in Sheffield, but would it explain the high viewing figures? Why did Mitchell vs Murray and other big domestic showdowns not get the same level of viewers?
As i said I havent got Sky so its hard for me to truely assess if anyhting was done differently. I think that Hatton as a name helped he always gets good figures. I guess Matchrooms relationship with Sky helps if they are able to use their influence to get a bit more airtime and to plug it a bit more. ****** was clearly having a troubled relationship with Sky by the time Mitchell Murray was in the works. Other factors I guess could be that it was St Paddys boxing seems to be a fitting backdrop to watch on such an evening.
Brook is an exciting fighter that is very close to a world title shot, Matchroom had him headline previously in Sheffield and that has helped boost his profile in his hometown. And against Matt Hatton, the casuals would be interested to see how Brook deals with 'Ricky's brother'. Sky gave this more build up than their usual Saturday night fights, Matchroom put on a decent under card and did plenty of press to promote this.
there was a few factors into the huge interest in this, one is the war of the roses tagline, thats always going to get the bandwagon fans interested, another big factor was there seemed to be loads of football fans in the arena, and with sheffield united at home and sheffield wednesday at notts county, alot of people went to football in groups of say there usual 10 mates and then went to the boxing after, on twitter and facebook i saw loads of people bigging up the saturday session and it really did get a buzz about the fight. also hatton shifted a few tickets himself with the hatton brand. Got to give credit to Hearn though, hes played Kell Brooks promotion card beautifully, 14 months ago i went to liverpool to watch him open a FW promotion against an african bum, and kell must have sold no more than 50 tickets, but with a bit of clever PR, Kell can sell around 6,000-7,000 tikets on his own in his home town, and hes got a buzz about him and a solid fanbase.
it was well promoted in sheffield, posters all over the place. Everyone was talking about the fight beforehand.
i think the majority of the fights tickets was sold in the opening days so it didnt really need much promo, i think twitter was more of a powerful marketing tool in this fight.
I had Kell to win by points with paddy power at evens and ko was 5/4, just shows the 1/25 is wrong as 1-7 at the shortest iirc. I never bought into the hype of fight as Hatton's greatest achievement upto yet is merely surviving a fight against Alvarez. He is lacklustre in ability and power, it was a win and Brook performed very well against a distinctly average domestic WW. The fight sold well because Matchroom and Sky have done a lot of PR work for Brook to bring him along as the next big thing. They also got him at home for the first time in ages which was a big, big factor. Brook would still be rotting on the undercards against a 'timed' opponent if he were with Frank. He would also be unpaid 'allegedly'. Matchroom are the future because they make the fights we want. This wasn't a particularly great fight but the fact they have made Martinez v Barker and Froch v Bute tells them all you need to know, who did Cleverly fight again? who is he lined up to fight this time? There is the problem, for too long Frank has diddled fans, no-one wants to watch Burns v Cook or Cleverly v Karpency. Instead they want to watch well known fighters or popular domestic figures go at it. With Matchroom it looks like we might get that so thumbs up to all concerned.
