It was more interesting than Ring mag in the 80s. In the 70s when Loubet took over, I thought he did a fair good job but never tried to improve on it (it was always thin on articles), even druing Ali's heyday in the 70s. the way they covered fights, their coverage was downright dull. It was no surprise to see KO, spelled K-O, take over market share with its flashier GQ inspired cover and liberal minded, sometimes idiotic writers For my money, Big Book of Boxing & International Boxing were the best. I got some beauts in stored away in boxes ut havent touched picked up any new ones in over a decade. Who the hell wants to follow guys like Tyson Fury? All the good fighters are gone, Boxing is dead
Boxing illustrated was another I forgot about. I rarely saw them in stock like the others. I remember buying one in 1981 but didnt see/buy another until April 1990 at a news rack in Hollywood you would think someone could write a decent boxing mag.
I ate up all of those books in the early 90s. I always liked the ringside roundups (especially the international scene as I had a healthy dose of USA, ESPN, PPV boxing). I seem to recall International Boxing. My only real issues with the mags I got were: 1) a lot of redundancy, and 2) a lot were published (I think) by the same company that handled a lot of wrestling (known as Apter Mags and named for Bill Apter). Aside I would love to have some sort of historical boxing journal.
I currently get the Ring, but it was a credit card purchase "extra" thing (so it didn't cost me anything but those credits). I definitely feel like the articles could use some work. I think there isn't the sort of real analysis that I was craving -- and while the ringside reports are ok, in the internet era I can get those in real-time without waiting a month or more for the written copy.
Boxing Monthly is the best Boxing magazine. The Ring is good. I have also been getting many Boxing Illutstrated's from the late 80's and early 90's. How do people rate World Boxing and Boxing 87, 88, 89, 90, etc?
Back in the days when they had Newstands....you could go and skim thru 4-5 good mags...then buy 2 or 3 and head back to the house. Some real "boxing cities"...had their own local monthly Newsletters sold at the Newstands....that were very good for local fighter info.
I personally miss Flash Gordon's "Tonights Boxing Program".It had more info and humour than Ring and all the others put together and was always current.
The glossy double-page posters from the middle pages of KO that had the fighter's full record on one side were great. I had a Roy Jones one when he was young and I was young. Ah, great days... My wee mates used to ask who the **** he was and why I didn't have a Naseem Hamed one. In the words of Alan Partridge, needless to say I had the last laugh.
I still think nothing beats 90s Boxing Monthly, they are about as good as it gets for me. I went through a phase of buying out peoples boxing mag collection a few years ago and it was always nice to see the odd KO mag show up in there. Its sad to think some of the **** that we have to read these days.
I liked the matchups , it was a decent mag, I would still buy it if it was available. The Ring is full of fighters music tastes[ who cares?] ,and bikini clad ring card girls. I like women but three full pages of pin ups in a boxing mag is ridiculous ,and lazy.
If you think Ring is bad i once bought a newspaper called The Daily Sport. Turns out there is very little sport.
