I never understood why people gave him credit for this. Ruiz is slower than Jones and cannot punch for heavyweight. So normally the punches Jones gets hit with would'nt have hurt him at light heavy, Ruiz was not going to hit him clean either. Roy won and I knew he would win. He didn't beat Lennox who was the real champ then. Jones did what he always had done. Handpicked opponents.

Masterclass. LOok at the winning streak Ruiz went on after the Jones loss.

can't argue with some of the points...ruiz didn't hit that hard, lennox was the real champ BUT jones did not handpick opponents

You're right. Piece of cake fight and expected outcome.

Reminds me of the Mayweather/Baldomir fight.

Seriously now, he didn't beat Lennox, but one has to give him credit for stepping up multiple weight classes and beating a hw champ. It's not like Ruiz would have lost to any fighter who would come up from light heavy and would be faster than him. Very few men can do/have done what Jones did. That's a fact. That's why people give him credit.

When I first heard about the fight, I thought Jones was crazy, I thought he was gonna get knocked out... then I checked the news & found out he had won a clear decision, when I seen the fight I thought `wow, this guy has the world by the balls, its gonna be harder for him NOT to go down alongside Robinson & Ali, he can only throw his ATG legacy away`

Then came Tarver & back to 175... why oh why Roy ?

He should have fought on at HWT, win or lose... or retired.

Thats why I rate him so high, because you cant erase what he did pre Tarver, so why punish him for simply being past his prime at age 34 ?
I feel Jones gets a raw deal when discussing the ATGs TBH.

absolutely, 100% agree brother. i think jones should get the same credit other old timers get: when ezzard charles lost almost 50% of his final 20 fights we didn't count those losses against him. same when louis, armstrong and countless others. jones lost to tarver past his prime. in the grand scheme of things, we should count his atg status based on what he did at his true peak. the losses of the past few years should be forgiven over time as others have been.

i'm one of the only nuthuggers on the forum to admit he has jones in his all time top 10 :rofl

The best thing about this fight is that it exposed Ruiz as a complete fraud when not allowed to hold. This was the only fight where Jay Nady's overly firm hand was a good thing. The chump Ruiz was unable to employ his strategy of frustrating and wearing Jones out by excessive clinching

The same thing happened against Toney, except he didn't really even try to clinch. I guess it was an ego thing, he thought he didn't have to fear these smaller guy's power.

Honestly, Toney's victory was more impressive than Jones's. Jones made Ruiz look like a talentless clown. Toney did the same, but also beat the **** out of him. Ruiz's ribcage was black and blue from all left hooks Toney landed to his torso

He did handpick. He always did. Ruiz was a handpicked champion which Toney also handpicked. It was a good win but expected. Jones is great and Ruiz is not. That difference in quality was enough for Jones to overcome Ruiz size difference, and Ruiz never uses his size really.

I give Jones credit, but the way he handpicked fights and never wanted a challenge shows how Jones knew he would beat Ruiz. Ruiz is a guy whom many great guys can beat and Toney did also. I think Jones is great. If you told me Glen Johnson would move up and beat Ruiz no way, but Jones is great and I didn't think it was that great a win if you look at styles and how good Jones was already. The win did not make Jones great, since Jones was already great. Jones could have never beaten the real champ Lennox, and that really would not have been a fair fight.

If you give Jones credit for the win, then no problems here.

Also, some fair points in your post.

i voted that it was a bad performance simply because u included it in the poll.

i don't know how u could possibly have put it in there, really.

of course it was an excellent victory for jones jnr.
