This is part of the reforms they started in response to the serious injury to Magomed Abdusalamov in 2013. Happens ALL the time in NY. Not sure why its not done as part of the minute between rounds, but its not. No conspiracy here.

We have to seperate two things.

The delay was formally correct because of the law. I have nothing against the rule if it helps to save lifes in the future.

    BUT

I am still not happy with the way how it enacted there. Everyone who answers here please rewatch the scene and then answer, not because of your memory.

WILDER was already out of his corner, he stands in front of Ortiz, the bell was ringing and AT THE MOMENT where the bell was ringing the ref decided to STOP the fight, took Wilder back to his corner and the doc checked him obviously. And one important fact: Wilder himself did not understand whata the ref was doing. I think he said something like "Man, what you are doing?" to the ref.

It looked like it was planned in that way to gain some extra seconds.

The correct procedure would be: Wilder having his one minute break with his team at the corner, THEN after one minute BEFORE he walks torwads Ortiz into the middle of the ring the doc is checking Wilder after the Ref already informed the doctor to look after Wilder at the beginning of the break.

So we have two possible scenarios here: First the ref forget about the rule and was remembered in that moment he stopped the fight after the bell was ringing or second he planned it that way to gain some extra time for Wilder to recover. I think both are realistic, probably 50/50 what is true. But i would be surprised if the ref forget about one of the most important rules in NY.

It didn't make any difference. Ortiz was gassing badly and was going to get knocked eventually. If anything stopping the contest gave Ortiz a breather.

That said nobody with a poor gas tank is going to beat Wilder. If Fury over the next 1-2 years can get back in to shape he has a chance, since he has the sill set and gas tank, but everyone else will be gassed out and get stopped in the later rounds.

This is bull****. Ortiz had the upper hand both in the seventh AND in the eighth round, he won both rounds. No sign of getting stopped here in those rounds so you can not bring the argument you did, of course we know better because the fight is already over but in the situation it MAKES a difference.

There is a huge diff between corruption and BS.

I think it was a honest mess up on the refs part. Maybe i am naive but after all that went on i could honestly see the ref coming to the conclusion he better check Wilder during or at the end of the break between rounds. Yes it was a benefit to Wilder but i am not willing to jump to the conclusion that it changed the outcome of the fight. Some times BS happens as we humans mess up during times of stress such as Refs and Umps are under.

Corruption plain and simple. If it's Ortiz in that situation he aint getting no extra 30 seconds rules or no rules

Why didn't Ortiz have a ring doc check on him at the start of round 6?

This. The question is WHEN a fighter receives such a treatment?! After getting hammered like Wilder in the round before? After getting knocked down? No idea.

I know you wanted me to score last time, but I didn't really need to. TKO1, my friend.

It's a shame you won't get to learn any of my scoring techniques.
