Everyone's posts have been accurate and fair. I'll only add that the first three names were titleholders and so were bringing their own hardware into most of those title fights. I don't think Tua was frozen out of any opportunities. It was just a combination of bad timing and poor habits.
It should also be noted that Tua was given three eliminators for the IBF title, so he definitely had his day in court.
Oh right. Better imagine the H2H monsters Max Baer and Schmeling to KTFO "John Ruiz, KOd in 1 by Tua: 12 world title fights Oleg Maskaev, KOd in 11 by Tua: 3 world title fights Hasim Rahman, KOd in 10 by Tua: 8 world title fights Obed Sullivan, KOd in 1 by Tua: 1 world title fight Fres Oquendo, KOd in 9 by Tua: 3 world title fights (plus 1 pending!)" as well as 30 others stoppages in 36 fights until Lewis Correct: That island megaendomorph rarely made the condition to be light and quick enough for his style, met Ibeabuchi as well as Lewis and became to old for that condition to accomplish. The rest is history.
I always thought Tua should have at least gotten another shot at Ruiz.... I think to a degree he was certainly avoided. When was his loss to Barret again? I remember that as being the door closing on his opportunity
Nobody fights a contender just for being dangerous. If you ae dangerous, but you are not backing it up on paper, then you are always going to struggle to get fights.
It's pretty simple really. Tua needed to chase guys down but his legs were very spindly and it look like he was ridin a chicken. That means like Hearns he did not have the stanmina to do what he need to do to catch up to people because the glycojen don't build up in the body's lower region like if he had regular sized human man's legs. If he coulda put on more muscle there then he'd have had more of the body's fewl source stored up in there but he couldn't. I don't wanna get political but it is a known fact that Tua was genetically limited there with his rna codes because Maori people have low muscle mass which is why they predisposed to diabetes and obesity and other metobolic syndrome type symptoms.
Yep. Tua may have only gotten 1 opportunity to compete for a major championship, but he had plenty of chances under a big spotlight and fell short.
What do any of them have to do with this thread? Are you denying that Schmeling was better fighter P4P than Tua? Because when Max faced the biggest obstacle of his live, he knocked out Louis - unlike Tua who tried to reach the distance against Lewis.
Tua has a good resume but he beat quality name fighters at off peak times in their careers. Like Maskaev and Ruiz early and Moorer very late. When it was time to step up and seize the moment outside the Ruiz fight he fell short. Whether a little (Ibeabuchi) or the total egg he laid against Lewis he seemed to miss his opportunity. He was fortunate with the draw with Rahman and even his win was marred by clear blows after the bell vs Rahman. good fighter but he has no one to blame for that Lewis performance but himself. And that hurt
So what were Tua's realistic paths to a belt? If he had beaten Chris Byrd, he would have fought for the vacant IBF title, against Evander Holyfield. Holyfield would have been very beatable at this stage. If he had beaten Hassim Rahman in their second fight, then this would have given him another shot at Byrd. Rahman got a shot at John Ruiz, for the WBA title in his next fight, so there might have been that option as well. What I am saying is that he had options, and he might well have had it in him to exploit them, if he had wanted it enough!
He had his opportunities. After wba heavyweight titlist Roid Jones returned to light-heavyweight, Tua was matched against Rahman for the interim wba title and the winner of that bout would be upgraded to full titlist. Unfortunately for Tua he withdrew after some issue with his promoter Kevin Barry. John Ruiz stepped in & ended up wba king again. woo-hoo! At 38 Tua was already reportedly "broke and homeless".
