Following on from jpab's thread on the smaller fighters boxing has to offer thought this would make for a interesting thread to see where most of our attention goes with regards to fights/divisions.

I've always been a fan of smaller fighters but yet for some reason have neglected them over recent times. I know names and when fights are coming but never go out of my way to watch them.

I've gone through the weights and below covers the divisions that spark my interest the most and least.

I've marked in blue the divisions i rarely take account of, Red for the divisions i really take note of and Green for divisions i'm half clued up on.

You don't have to do this but felt it would make for an interesting discussion.

I know some will say ''I don't watch smaller fighters because the coverage on tv etc'' but that's to easy a excuse seeing as we have a few on the board who will stay up to wee hours to watch the 'wee' men battle it out for supremacy.

This is a overall world wide discussion not just domestically based. I mentioned in jpab's thread that my father never liked watching heavyweights. Said most of his attention was on the smaller guys around flyweight to featherweight. He's still the same now prefers watching smaller fighters to Cruisers/Heavy's.

    :good

*Awaits someone to do red for the whole things *

I think i show the lighter divisions (except minimum weight) the same kind of interest up to about Feather. Generally i really enjoy fights at these weights but the closeness in size between some of the weight classes makes it hard for a relative newbie like myself to get clued up. Id regard myself as a casual in these weights definitely.

Super Feather up to Lightheavy are the weights i follow with real passion. They have the speed that i miss in crusier and heavy. Also it helps that these are the more usual weights for American/British boxers which makes it easier to find out about and get coverage on.

My "favourite" weights currently are Lightweight, Jr Welter and Super Middle i would have to say. But am starting to get more interested in the lighter weights because that seems to be where alot of the talent and excitement is atm.

Shock-horror, Jpab's gonna talk about the lighter weights again...

Strawweight is the only one of the weights below feather that I don't really take note of. Mostly because, along with super-feather, it has a severe dearth in almost any quality fighters. Other than that I'd give myself a red from light-fly to featherweight.

I'm not sure how to differentiate between being half-clued and clued up. I suppose in a few divisions I only really know a bit about the champions and nothing more. Maybe if I just put it down instead of rambling on it'll make more sense:lol:.

    MAIN INTEREST:

    • Light-Flyweight
    • Flyweight
    • Super-Flyweight
    • Bantamweight
    • Super-Bantamweight
    • Featherweight
    • Lightweight
    • Light-Welter
    • Super-Middle
A LOT OF INTEREST BUT WOULD NEED TO FOLLOW MORE:

    • Welter
    • Light-Heavy
    • Cruiser
    • Light-Middle
    • Middle
    LITTLE INTEREST:

    • Strawweight
    • Super-Feather
    • Heavyweight

It amazes me that a thread like this (which i thought was really interesting and wanted to hear what people thought) gets ignored. Whilst another thread about Khans ****ish team, one comparing Frochs resume and some more nonsense that a mayweather has said gets far more interest. Baffling.

The HW's. It is of course the most important division and the best are fighting the best. As far as i am concerned all the nonsense extra wight classes have destroyed the dwarf divisions. Realistically say for instance you are a top level natural welterweight then that basically means you have at least 12 World titles you can easily fight for at welterweight, super welterweight and junior middleweight. It's utter nonsense and in American and the UK especially we see constant 'champions' at these wights sit on their title and never bother to unify. Load of balls really, give me the heavies where we don't have to put up with this nonsense.

I'd say I follow heavyweight down to say...bantamweight equally strongly. No particular favourites currently, if theres a good fight on I don't tend to miss it. Historically I've always been a middleweight fan because I think it has produced the best fighters. It's the weight class where the average guy fits in, thats why its got the best depth in boxing history perhaps. Plus I think its the perfect blend of speed and power.

Below that I slip a bit, I fully admit. My knowledge is suspect below that. If somethings on I'll tune in but I don't follow them relentlessly down there. I probably should, I don't feel like I have a conscious bias against them, but I must have somewhere in the back of my mind as I do tend to miss those fights more often. I don't think I'd ever get into straw weight though, I can't convince myself there would ever be any depth whatsoever at that weight.

I would say from Superfeather weight up to light heavy which seems to be the general consensus here . I'm not too clued up on middleweight which seems to be a fairly poor division with the exception of Martinez . Growing up in the era of Benn and Eubank i have a lot of affection for Super middle weight .

Call me a philistine but I watch very little boxing below lightweight & dont really follow the little guys apart from some of the championship fights

Favourite division is 147, then 168 & HW

The 5 I care most about are:

    Heavyweight.
    Super Middleweight.
    Welterweight.
    Light Welterweight.
    Light Heavyweight.

    In that order.

Im mostly clued up on the obvious ones, but I keep looking at the middleweight division and see all these young, talented fighters (Korobov, Lemeuix, Golovkin, Geale, N'jikam, Lee to an extent etc) and have delusions that one is going to make a big run and emerge the top of the tree and the undisputed champ.

I would like to see Tv companies and promoters make a push for total unifcation at light heavy, middle, welter (a difficult one with all involved) and lightweight, for the good of the sport
