I am 27 years old and looking to get into boxing. I previously used to do kickboxing as a teenager but only for a year or two, so basically have no experience. I enjoy watching the sport and want to try getting into things but don't know what the best approach is. I am overweight at the moment and that's one of the reasons I am doing this to loose weight. I am 199lbs at around 27% body fat. My plan was to develop my very bad fitness first of all, I am going to make a basic gym in my garage with some equipment. Once I start to drop the fat and build the fitness I am going to start looking for a club for some expert advice and sparing. This is my plan but would really appreciate some advice on what to work on first, this is basically day 1 of my journey.

My ultimate goal is to have an amateur fight and win. I know this might not seem a big goal for some people on here but I would be really happy with it. To put myself in the ring in front of people and win a fight would be unbelievable and its something that terrifies me as well as excites me

Any help to achieve this would be great, I have very little knowledge of the sport and want to learn as much as possible

Go to your nearest boxing gym and speak to them on exactly what you mentioned above. They are in the best position to give you actual support in all aspects towards your goal.

    Good luck :)

Thanks Titanic, I am going to have a look about and find out what boxing clubs are good in my area.

What would you suggest for training? mainly fitness to start or technique

Get a Heavy Bag and work it as much as you can....will help you with timing and stance and the weight will fall off you.!!!!

thanks fists of steel. That's the first thing on my list for the garage. This might sound stupid but I was going to go through some youtube videos on working the heavy bag and try and use it as much as possible

    Also...

I was looking at bags and for the brackets you can either get a wall bracket or a hanging from the ceiling one. I assume hanging from the ceiling will be better so you are free you move around the bag. My question us though, is it ok using the wall brackets or is it too close to the wall to rally work the bag? I wan the best option but if the wall brackets work well it would maximise the use of space in the garage

If you know how to box then just start shadowboxing each day for rds on end. The fat will come off in no time.

Most guys quit when they gets punched to face. Get yourself punched to face and see if you can take it. Also if you get hit to the body and go down, can you keep going?

You have to go through that. Getting in shape is important, but the fighting is totally different art.

Start running and the heavy bag... Shadow box as much as you can.. watch others and learn.. look at yourself in the mirror while doing so and pay attention to what your seeing.. Once your lower in weight the jump rope did wonders for me when it came to losing weight.. Best advice is to go to gym and talk to the trainer honestly. Then once you feel ready get in a couple rounds.. Like someone else said above.. Its totally different when in the ring.. Thats a great goal man.. It helped me a lot.. 'Good luck to you

Find a gym, get yourself a trainer if your really mean what you say about your goals.
Big difference between punching on a bag by yourself at home and training with a coach that knows what they are doing.
