im not british and i agree with this its right a prime benn and eubank wouldve murdered collins i ****en hate blind patrism
A really great fighter, always entertaining and a huge hitter Benn was well over the hill by the time he fought collins but eubank certainly wasnt!! Eubank was 29 and undefeated when he fought collins so give credit where credit is due please!!
Eubank had just turned 28. But he certainly wasn't the same fighter he was in '90-'91. Although in his previous performance, against Henry Wharton, his punch output and offensive stamina was suddenly, out of the blue, better than ever and his technical skill as good as ever. That was largely due to regulated weight-reduction by the authorities, though, having turned GREY prior to his fight with Dan Schommer (a fight he clearly lost by far, may I add)... Infact, his weight was regulated again through the camp for Collins I. (Eubank used to fast dangerously.) So yes, Collins did fight a physically able Eubank, but Eubank deserved that decision!
Big, big puncher, but chin and stamina were not the best. Would ahve been dangerous to anyone. Beat Doug Dewitt, and sadly, Gerald Mclellan, but lost to Watson, and I think Eubank.
Benn's supposed lack of stamina earlier in his career can be explained by his putting everything into every punch. His chin? That was odd. He'd take humungous overhand rights flush from Eubank and McClellan and keep on it but be wobbled severely by nothing-shots from nothing-punchers.
In Eubanks first fight with Collins he had Collins sprawled and Eubanks stepped off the gas to allow Collins to recover, lucky for Collins. Then he got some hypnotist to give him confidence to eak out a points win in the second fight.
I know I'm gonna upset a few people saying this but oh well. I dont believe Eubank was past it for Collins, Benn maybe, too many wars but Collins doesnt get enough credit for beating Eubank. I remember Collins fighting McCallum in 1990 when McCallum was probably one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world and Collins was still green and not disgracing himself. He gets underrated alot, I will say Eubank and Benn (aside from his super-human effort against McClellan) probably had their best days at middleweight while Collins excelled at super-middle but I'm with the Irish boys on this one for sure Collins was very capable and deserves full credit. As for Benn I really love Benn, I know he wasnt the greatest 'boxer' ever but he was exciting and left everything in the ring. The Watson fight I felt he punched himself out and was stopped when he was exhausted. To go over to America and take the belt from an American from his own back yard was terrific, he annihilated Doug de Witt. I still feel his fight against Barkley would have been one of the best ever if the three knockdown rule hadnt been in effect but it was a blistering opening round. One of my favourite Benn fights is his one against Robbie Sims, Hagler's decent half-brother. Benn was the only man to stop him and Sims fought some very good fighters, that is an underrated win for him as he didnt go overboard in that one, he took his time and picked his moment to take Sims out. The Dark Destroyer was something else and I still enjoy rewatching his fights now.
Good stuff, agree with all of it, including about Steve Collins. He was a top fighter as well. I loved them days, i was about 13 or so when Benn first started getting shown on saturday afternoons then the other lads started coming through. We had our own little scene going there for a bit, great days.
We were very lucky to grow up in that era. We really dont have a domestic scene like it now. Still waiting for the next Benn and Eubank.
Definitely Watson would have gone on to be a world champ if he hadnt been tragically injured. Herol Graham deserves a mention as well..
