What do people mean when they say "Roy never learned the fundamentals"?

Roy was slowing down before he went up and beat Ruiz, but it didn't matter because he still had his confidence and stamina. In Jones va Tarver-3 and against Johnson he could've won those fights but fought scared, In Hopkins vs Jones 2, and against Calslappy, and Green he was shot, although he had a chance against Bernard but lost due to being gunshy. Fundamentals would not have made any difference in any of those fights, Roy should've called it quits about 5 yrs ago.

I agree with you on most of what you said. Especially the last part. Retire after Tarver III or beating Ruiz.

I just don't think he trained with protecting himself in mind. If he did so I don't think he would have EVER been in trouble.

To your point though, no matter how we modified RJJ's style... he would have stuck around too long. :verysad

Very true statement, but the only thing I would add is that Roy had even greater physical gifts than floyd. Roys speed and power was an unheralded combination and he threw such a wide range of punches that his opponents never knew what to expect, roy was so fast and could literally see punches coming and he could get out of the way but as you said when he slowed down it caught up with him.

Hands down, chin up in the air, jumps straight back, leads with wide punches, doesnt really know how to in fight, his defence when in range is basically to put his hands up and pray for the best. Roy cant fight in the pocket and really only knows how to fight one way and cant adjust in a fight. Roy cant do simple things like roll with punches and when he has somein his chest hes pretty lost.

Any trainer who starts teaching a kid how to box could show him tapes of RJJ and just say "don't do anything he does".

Roy's unnorthodox style is what made him so popular...almost like Ali...no one had ever seen some of the tricks Roy was doing in the ring...the hands behind the back knockdown...Roy is top 20 all time...top five in terms of pure athleticism

If Roy fought like a "funtamentally sound" boxer he might have prolonged his career by miles but he would be the less exciting fighter.

As he is, he was great. He just stayed past his expirarion date too long.

It is also the style that will be the reason why ESB will still be debating about Rouy once he finally and offically retire (with no hope of one last fight). Same way we are still reading threads about Naz.

This is all true and yet prime for prime he was one of the most dominating/unbeatable looking fighters ever. Roy did those things cause he could get away with them, and it made him that much better. If he fought like everybody else he wouldn't have been as good as he was. You could say the same thing for Ali, Pacquiao, and many other unconventional fighters.

bald head slick said it perfec i have fought b4 also but i do think confidence had alot to do with him not beating hopkins i actually think roy has more left than hopkins does physically now he just cant make his self pull the trigger i thought hopkins lookd like a dead man in there thats why he kept having to take breaks lets just hope they both retire

He so relied on his immense physical gifts that when he lost a step he began to look like a bag of **** when he fought A level fighters. He's a smart guy and knows what he's doing but he don't have a crafty defensive style like James Toney or Bhop so he has aged poorly. just my 2 cents of course.

Ali was the best heavyweight in the world nearly 20 years after his prime. With most of his physical gifts gone he still was too much for very good fighters. Do you blow bongs every night before you post. Seriously its like romper room gone bad every time you throw your opinion into the mix.

It was his unconventionality that made him a great fighter. I'm pretty sure he knows the fundamentals and then some. Been around the sport for a long time.
