Yep -- He's talked the talk for years. Now he needs to walk the walk. He claims to be the best, but he has never unified the titles in any division, nor stayed in a division and cleaned it out. He is an extremely skillful fighter, but his career is as much a matter of careful match making as skill. Welterweight is a division that has produced dozens of great fighters. It is also fairly deep with talent right now. If PBF cleaned it out and retired undefeated, even haters like me would have to rank him among the top 25 ATG's. Unless he does that, he doesn't make top 50. Boo
Does anyone realize just how RIDICULOUS this sounds even in context? Yet, this is how we talk on a daily basis about boxing. "Congrats, you did something. Now do this, or you've done nothing." I know if that's all I heard over the course of my life, I'd alienate myself on purpose...
If Floyd fights again and he is not into it as you can plainly see he is probably a little tired of boxing and the fans never giving him his due and booing him over his whole career may be an incling. HE CAN NEVER DO ENOUGH. He can fight Cotto beat him and then you will say Williams...The reason why Floyd does not need to clear out the welter weight division.........B/c he is not a ****ing career or even half a career or even 1/3 of a career welter....he is a fighter...that has been fighting championship level fights since 130 pounds up until 154 pounds...championship level fights with not that many tune ups.......STFU with that unify bull****..
He needs to clear out the welterweight division by beating Cotto, Margarito, Williams, Cintron and possibly a few good contenders like Clottey and Berto. These are all fighters in their prime in a division widely recognized as the best in boxing and perhaps as loaded in talent as 147 has ever been. Floyd has a chance to make some history here if he is up to the task. Even if he loses a couple I would rank him higher for having made the attempt.
lo get exposed ... there is nothing to expose . the guy dont have any weaknesses . only father time will get floyd my friend and i think he will be long gone before that happens :good
I didn't mean he wouldn't be remembered a great boxer, all great boxers of their time are remembered, but the ones that fought everybody are the ones who are recognised as the greatest ever. In context with the history of sport, how great are wins over Ricky Hatton, a close UD decision with De La Hoya who is old, Castillo and Zab Judah? That doesn't sound like the resume of the greatest fighter that ever lived, which is what he claims to be. Even if he stepped up to the plate and beat Paul Williams, Cotto, Mosley, and Margarito, he still wouldn't be the greatest ever, but you know what, he'd be remembered for not ducking anyone and still retiring undefeated, that's ATG status.
It's true that being the GOAT is an insurmountable task these days but if he beats all those true Welters that you mentioned then a case can be made for him being somewhere in the top 50 ATG or better. In the end I think Mayweather wants the respect of the experts and general public despite all his mad rantings about retiring and much of that foolishness can be attributed to his personal insecurities and how he goes about trying to hide them. There's no better time to make his mark in boxig history now that the Welterweight division is the best it's ever been. People like Klitschko will have a hard time because the heavyweight division is devoid of true talent but Floyd does not get to use that excuse.
That's all I'm saying. These stupid threads like What do we want from Mayweather? The question is, What do fight fans want from the fighter who publicly claims to be the best fighter that ever lived. More fights, possibly against an undefeated challenger with wins over Mosley and Judah? Maybe even a victory over a Welterweight champion named Williams who is undefeated with a win over Margarito? You have to understand, if a guy goes out into the street and claims to be the strongest there, and then backs down when somebody challenges him, everything he says is discredited and we judge him on what he has done. Mayweather has done great things, no doubt about it, but his resume and longevity does not account for him being mentioned in the same breathe as true all time greats. My opinion, it's what the forums for btw.
Cotto and Williams. Then retire. Or just retire. I don't really care. I just want to see good fights.
As far as I'm concern, he doesn't have to go up in weight . . . all he needs to do is fight Williams and Cotto then retire if he wants to.
