BIG DEE HERE= I think Gavilan was a all-time great because of when he fought the welterweight division was at a very high point in it`s history like
it was during Hearns and Leonards era. If Kid Gavilan had a big punch which he didn`t he would have been right up there with Sugar Ray Robinson. His chin was up there with Robinsons without question.

Great welterweight. Although he seemed to throw "arm punches" rather than get his weight behind them. Part of his showy style, probably.

Too inconsistent for me to rate him that high, like Ike Williams, even though they both had their shady decision losses and own periods of brilliance. Fighters like Carlos Ortiz and Eder Jofre get there first.

I don't take into as much consideration the losses of those who fade down the stretch, and rack them up at the end. He was pretty consistent in his prime, given his competition, and his wins resume is quite deep as well. Ortiz has a fantastic top wins resume, but I'd say his resume probably wasn't as deep as Gavilan if memory serves correctly. Though I believe Ortiz rated just above Gavilan on my list. I thought Jofre was behind the lot of them, even though his resume is underrated. He's right around there as well though, all top 35. I believe Williams was right around Gavilan, whether above or below I don't remember.
