Watching UFC 65 now, where he fights Monson. I've never seen Sylvia fight before and I know he's the butt of a lot of jokes, but to be honest, I'm a lot more impressed than I thought I would be. In this fight, he fought from range and used his height well. All his punches were straight and crisp with no looping swings. He had a good sprawl, his cardio looked pretty great for a big man, (he was moving well in the 4th and 5th), he escaped a couple of good submission attempts, he held his own in the wrestling and grappling, he went for a couple of submissions, and in general he looked like quite a well-rounded fighter. As I said, this is the only fight of his I've ever seen, so I may have just caught him on a really good night. He was doing **** all in the 5th round, but he didn't seem like it was because he was out of gas, but rather because he knew he had the fight in the bag and was happy to run out the clock. Thoughts on the guy? :hat
He was a big guy. Its never easy to fight someone of his proportions. He worked hard to get to a point where he was half decent and to be fair gave Nogueira a hell of a beating before being caught. But was never world class beyond his freakish proportions. When Couture and Nogueira defeats destroyed his confidence he was never the same.
He was a big guy with decent skills who dominated in a poor era for HW's For the UFC, obviously not Pride which at the time was the premium HW division I agree with Will the Couture & Nog defeats took a lot out of him.
i think hes a guy thats easy to be critical of in hindsight but i remember when he was genuinely and deservedly considered one of the toughest fights out there. tim gets alot of **** for winning due to size and not skill but if you watch closely hes actually one of the most controlled strikers around. every punch is straight, sharp and accurate, no looping caveman swings, great pressure and workrate. unfortunately for tim his waterloo came in the nogueira fight. hed made his money and didnt get much respect from the fans so his heart really wasnt in the game after that.
Yeah I noticed that most of all. He showed great form on his punches in the Monson fight. He used his reach extremely well and threw some of the most consistently straight, crisp and accurate shots I've seen in MMA. No hooks, no crude swings. Just jabs and clean straight right hands. And his cardio was outstanding for such a huge man. I was expecting to see a fat, crude brawler, but instead I saw a technical striker with very good takedown defence who appeared to be no mug on the ground. :conf :hat
I always liked him. Suck for him he doesn't have a good genetic. If the training would have give him the results he wanted to see I don't think the Nog and Couture loss would have had the same impact on him. But after that I think he just said **** it... ! I'm happy he found some work in Japan though !
He is a fat, slothlike joke who was only champion because the division was ****-poor pathetic when he reigned both times. If Arlovski didn't have a wet toilet paper Chin he would never have regained the title.
At his peak he was a guy who worked hard (back then) and made the most with what he had. Tim had a decent jab that he used to setup a pretty strong right hand that knocked out a few guys. Tim had decent enough takedown defense to allow him to use his striking as well. A guy like him would have no shot in todays UFC but he did manage to put together a quality career. 2 reigns as Champion and beat fellas like Arlovski, Vera, Rothwell, Monson, Rodriguez etc. I always wonder what happens if Tim finished off Big Nog about 4 years ago ? Tim was very close and that would have been a big win and another title reign.
A bygone era where MMA was fought at a lower standed with a smaller talent pool. MMA continues to embrace more talent and the level of boxing, jits, kick boxing etc is still improving. Each of the champs have some sublime all round talent. Only JDS looks to be a 'style'.
