Deep down inside I sometimes feel its a refuge, a bull**** propped up division for guys not good enough to be middleweights or with sufficient balls to be Lightheavies.

This isnt alltogethher true but in many ways it is, thoughts opinions?

If the MW's were better I think they'd come up and fight the SMW's. Why not get belts @ 2 weights?
Likewise for the LHW's. They'd come down & fight. If they can't make weight they shouldn't be fighting SMW's.

SMW is the perfect mix between technique and power, you can go up in weight at see more power but less technique. Or you can go down in weight and see more technique but less power. As i started SMW is the perfect mix.

Not every SM has the ability to make 160 and if they had been fighting at 175 for their career's you wouldn't be giving them any credit for fighting guys who are naturally bigger. It's a far better division than LH or Middle at the moment anyway.

I think its one of the more legitimate "junior / super" weights, theres a big natural size jump 160-175 (witness Marvin Hagler), so, slightly yoff topic, I like 168.

Hmm.... I don't really understand how the 168lbs division can take any criticism. It's a ridiculously stacked division, as evidenced by how good the Super Six Tournament is, even with the omission of a guy like Bute.

I don't see how you question the "balls" of people who can make 168lbs... for fighting at 168lbs. By that reasoning we can say that anyone fighting at 140lbs is a coward for not fighting at 147lbs... or anyone at 130lbs is a coward for not fighting at 135lbs.... The reasoning is just flawed beyond belief.

Why would people be criticized for fighting at 168lbs instead of 160lbs? I'd say it shows heart to fight at a higher weight against better fighters than to not do so. Unless, of course, you're suggesting that 160lbs is a better division than 168lbs, which just isn't the case.

I don't understand the criticisms you've made in this thread about the 168lbs division, at all.

It's better than either the middle or lightheavy divisions.

It's nothing to do with 'not being good enough' to be MW's, that's a ridiculous assumption. It's to do with the fact they are too big to make middleweight comfortably. You're basically saying with that statement every 168 current or ever was crap. You're basically saying Calzaghe couldn't of made it as a MW because he wasn't good enough, or that Abraham couldn't make it as a MW, despite the fact he already has.

And you can't expect a guy to completely bypass the super-middle weight division and go to LHW if they move up from MW. Look at the weight disparity, that's 15lbs which is a lot in today's game. I think you're post is illogical and poorly thought out.

You are talking balls because of the simple fact super middleweight is a lot stronger than middleweight and light heavyweight.

The 168 division is great now. The top 10 Is filled with very skilled fighters, and the matchups are fascinating.

Considering the comparative shitness of the middleweight division and the fact that you don't need balls to be a lightheavyweight, you need a zimmer frame, that's a fairly silly statement.

Average age of Ring magazine top five at LHW = 38.4 years.

SMW is a competitive division, and unquestionable deeper than LHW or MW right now, but I'm still not sold on all of these guys being as good as advertised. Part of the reason it's so competitive is that there are a bunch of good, but ultimately flawed, fighters there who all have the capacity to lose to each other because none of them are really elite at this stage.

I imagine that by the end of the super six tournament we will have a couple of truly great fighters at the top and the rest of the big names will have sunk to perenial contendership.

Right now SMW is full of POTENTIAL, but it's hard to say where the actual talent level lies without more of these guys fighting each other.
