One of the first things I learned that helped me was that boxing is not fist fighting. Huge difference between a "school yard" boxing match. And boxing. Maybe this gem can help you?
you need to tighten it up as your punches are a bit wide spend more time with the trainer also work on speed, not so much hand speed but you seem to **** your shoulder/that area back a lot before punching
OK... lots of things. The good. 1. You are having fun, and that is key for sticking with it. Keep that up. 2. All that work is getting you in good condition. Keep that up. 3. You are moving around the bag. Keep that up. The not so good: 1. You are off balance throwing your shots, and that reduces your power tremendously. Ask your trainer to show you basic stance and footwork. It is where you start. Otherwise you are thrashing the bag with arm punches and doing no damage. Also, if you take a punch off balance, you are going down on your butt with the quickness. 2. Many times you are not looking at the target. Keep your eye on the target and punch slower, concentrate on form. Power comes from the proper form. Speed comes from repetition of that proper form. Start slow and work your way up, otherwise all that work is for nothing. 3. Learn things in phases. Start with the stance, then footwork (stepping, circling) then the jab, then the straight right, etc.. 4. Once you learn how to stand, move and punch, put them together in combination. Practice them in slow motion on the bag until your movement is correct. Concentrate on transferring your weight, which is where your power comes from, keeping your eye on the target, landing flush punches and then recovering to your guard. I'll be happy to answer any questions if you message me. Good luck.
Words of wisdom from my coach. He's always telling me, "Slow down, don't worry about power. Power and speed will come later. Worry about doing it right."
because I've been taking it slower on the bag and I no longer want your advice so please close it. I guess you guys can keep posting advice, I'm no gonna look at it anymore.
no its cos youve been exposed and you want to keep posting advice on other threads and being taken seriously which you know if people are going to read this they wont take you seriously
not at all. I wouldn't post a thread about advice and then post on other threads giving my own advice? that's stupid. so seriously get off my case. I don't think I would be giving advice because people already know on a rookie. what do you mean I've Been exposed? you mean I exposed myself by posting a YouTube of myself hitting the heavybag? I was just looking for advice but a boxing forum clearly isn't a good place for that.
Well, the kid has had a hard ride in this thread... mostly by me, but he 'appears' to have turned a corner... good stuff. Tommygunn - I would suggest to you that this is only the beginning of your journey. If you genuinely have listened and are applying the advice that has been given, good for you, but don't let it stop there. For a young fighter, this forum is a valuable resource, with access to many well informed people with regards to training, diet, injuries etc right at your fingertips. Believe it or not, many people that post here are here to help the likes of you. All most of us ask is that people listen, otherwise we feel like we are wasting our time trying to help, and that can be very annoying. Stick with it... tenacity is a good thing for a fighter to have. Keep on working and asking questions, and you will improve. If you choose not to continue to use this facility, all I can say is that I hope that you have learned one thing... and that is the importance of listening to good advice. If nothing else, this should set you in good stead for the future.
maybe your right. but there's no better place to get advice then at a gym. I just want to let you guys know that i'm really not that wild when I'm sparring or when I hit the heavybag in general. i just think me taking it easy for 2 minutes on the heavybag would generally be a little boring. that's partcially why I was throwing hooks and uppercuts all over the place :twisted::twisted:!! To prove it to myself, Last night I stayed up a little later then usual and boxed more "professionally" on the heavybag for 30 minutes and found myself not very tired. I only flurried or as Johnny would say . Not only do I burn energy faster, but you create bad habits like many of you said. :hey I only flurried on the way out when I was done with it. And I made an effort not to use my hooks as much, even know it is clearly my strongest punch. All in all, thanks for all your advice guys, specially Bodi. Even though I was a little ***** half of the time on this thread you guys still said right advice.
