I'm looking for information on Bert Whitehurst, but I haven't found anything about his life, only that he died at 49. His career lasted about 10-11 years. I'm surprised by the number of consecutive fights he had; he fought almost every month... his best victory was against Bob Satterfield. But he's best remembered for his second fight against Sonny Liston, who was saved by the bell. Of his 26 losses, only 6 were by knockout. He was a tough guy, no doubt. Does anyone know what he did after boxing? How did he die?
His original nickname was "Sure" because he would sure knock you out. Good ole Sure Bert Whitehurst. Haven't heard that name since growing up in the Minoan part of Maryland, near where he was from.
Sorry can’t help but it’s coincidental that I had a look at his second fight vs Liston just the other night leading me to try and find more info on him - but like you, I couldn’t find too much on him. Hopefully someone can give us more insight on him.
