What do you look for in a circuit training

    Hi all,
    to cut a very very long story short i am going to get qualifications in fitness instructor and circuit training in order to work for a guy who is starting his own circuit class. This guy really knows his stuff and although iv learnt alot over the years iv been training now iv realised teaching is a whole new ball game and im going into it pretending i know nothing and just learning as much as i can!!
    He has done a deal with a local boxing club to train and condition their amateurs on a seperate night from their skill work. My question is as fighters what do you expect from a circuit! Having been doing his circuit class for a while and being a training nut for the last say 3-4 years i know it is already tough. But these are fighters we will be training so i want to gain their respect immediately and really put them through their paces!

    Any ideas and all ideas are welcome! Dont hold back (ill sift through any bull **** :p)

    Know what you are doing and why, everyones an individual with different needs.

    Diversity I guess. It should target all aspects of fitness, and give one system time to rest while the other is worked on. Exercises should be easy to switch between, no putting on gloves and other time consuming things. Tempo should be quite high. And of course the exercises should not be boring. When it's done I want to feel knackered.

    i love circuit training. i think each exercise should target a different area. I think a circuit should also target mainly cardio. Some exercises using light to medium weights so you can get lots of reps out targeting endurance, explosiveness and cardio.


    if i was working on strength i wouldn't do it in a circuit, i would just do specific weights and take time between sets. That's why i think circuits should target cardio and
    explosiveness.

    example circuit

    burpees
    box jumps
    kettle bell swings
    sledge hammer swings
    weighted get ups
    squats (so many variations, can add in over head press)

    can add in some specific exercises
    like punch out drills on heavy bag
    kicks on heavy bag

    the list goes on

    **** off all the isolatary stuff unless its in a super set.

    Make it sport specific where possible.

    Challenge the core.

    Work on agility. It doesn't often get truly challenged in training, but in a fight a lot of movement is very explosive due to nerves.

    Decide whether your objective is speed/power or endurance. Set up circuits with the objective in mind. Ie a Plyo circuit would be short with maximal rest periods- a endurance circuit would have minimal rest and quite a significant amount of time on each station.

    PS do your fitness instuctor qualification in a college- distance courses are a COMPLETE waste of time. If you want real knowlege spend time with a good teacher who understads the various concepts entirely.



    I did a focus level 2 course and it was a pile of ****. I passed easily but when I went to college to do my personal trainer qualification I realised I actually knew **** all. Go to college straight away or you'll be re-reading your manuals reguarly.

    Thanks for the advice guys! Good stuff! I would like to do the course in a college! ( thought the distance stuff would be crap) but i will mostly be learning off of the guy that is setting up the business , he wont let me do my own class until im ready like he said its his reputation on the line which i respect!
    Thanks for the advice so far, like i said just reading and learning as much as possible so any ideas are welcome!

    The idea is going to be its on a completely separate night from their skill work so its going to be pure conditioning and fitness work! Tbh i reckon the circuit class he already does , pretty much covers everything youve put RDJ just wondered weather there was anything to bear in mind when doing it for fighters specifically. Its 45 mins and the temp is very very high! The variety is brilliant. Personally id like to see some more unconventional exercises when we do it for the boxers (eg sledge hammer Tyre ect)
