Wassup guys this is the first thread I post so anyways just wanted to know your opinion on this very underrated fighter who imo never lost a fight and I think hes the welterweight that has the best chance of winning against mayweather. Any thoughts?
Hes an A level gatekeeper. The guy who loves to stand in the center of the ring with a safety first approach capable of getting a nice shot here and there. Hes not dynamic, doesnt have a killer instinct, hes just not a great fighter. Floyd will beat him just as bad as JMM. JMM at least tries
Just a tad below the "elite". His lack of activity has cost him fights against Margarito and Cotto. It's weird watching him not sustain his activity time and time again. He's just too inactive for his own good. Great left hook. Granite chin. Decent hand speed. Very good defense. Lacks pop though. Really, his level of inactivity is what's keeping him from going to that "elite" level. I don't know if he conserves energy because he knows he's going to get tired but that's his main issue. Or maybe he lacks heart and goes into a semi-shell when he's attacked. So it might be a mental issue.
high risk low reward kind of fight. very highly skilled and always in shape but lacks that zip to take it to the next level
Hes a good fighter and imo i think he could even be a contender in any era of WW. He has a strong chin, good strength and good mentality. From a kid from Ghana, he's done good for himself and I think will make some noise sometimes in the near future.
A very good fighter who somehow falls short. Someone in an earlier post said something like a gatekeeper to the elite. I agree with this somehow. I think Clottey need to find his mean streak, go in the ring not to win rounds but to hurt the other man. If he could do this he could go far. His defence is great and his accuracy is laser-like in his precision. He's very good when he's fighting on the inside too.
I know his level of inactivity is flagrant sometimes but still I mean I never seen him hurt in a fight he has a very good chin very good defense decent speed hes not that easy to hit I think he would really give mayweather some trouble I think mayweather would really have a hard time finding the target. I dont know I guess Ill wait and see how good he does against quintana.
hes the ike quartey of this generation.... which is a compliment, but also meaning that up till this point, clottey has yet to force himself onto the same level as his peers with a big win. His best scalps so far are corrales and judah..... good news for him is he will have plenty of chances (hopefully) to right the course, i believe in him but hes going to have to put out more in fights. I would love to see him against berto, mosley and collazo.
No. Clottey, as I mentioned many times but no one wanted to read, is a gatekeeper at best, he's NOT a champion quality fighter. He has decent skills but lacks the stamina and heart, any fighter that relies a lot to obvious cheating tactics has no confidence in his self and that's why I question his heart. He could give anyone out there, including Mayweather, a decent fighter for three rounds. After that watch him go inactive and do silly faces with a few flurries here and there. Against Margarito his stamina was exposed very well, Margarito is a one dimensional aggressive wide open fighter, you need stamina to keep throwing to keep that guy off you as the fight goes, Clottey did good for the first 4 then claimed he injured his hand. Why do I question the hand injury claims?, because he also ran out of gas against many others from round 4+. The man fought a blown up, beyond shot and mentally/physically broken Corrales coming off two major losses nearly TWO weight divisions below at a catchweight of 150 and even though Corrales was CLEARLY out of it from round 7 to 10, Clottey had no stamina to finish. He would land a few punches that would clearly show Corrales wide open for more to be finished and he didn't throw anything because he was clearly tired. No stamina but decent skills = gatekeeper.
There are a number of solid opinions of Clottey on this thread. He's a bit like Chuvalo in the 60's, Sutherland in the 70's, or McKart in the 90's. A really solid fighter who will hang around the top ten for a long time, but lose his most important fights.
