To knock down his opponents jabbing arm by bashing it down in order to throw them off and BAM here comes a Jab or Right hand. I suppose it's legal, i've seen this happen in a few of his fights, the first being Ray Mercer and this past Saturday with Iggy. The ref never warned him anytime about it and the HBO crew commented on it a bit. It's odd I've never seen it done that way before. I know other boxers who "paw" at the opponents jabbing hand but not knock it down with force like that. Just looking for others to comment on this technique
The problem was that he WASN'T throwing after knocking it down. If he had, then it would have been an entirely different fight. He could have thrown a right hand to neutralize that jab or simply circled. The pawing technique was unusual.
Who cares, Iggy could of threw the other hand and caught him wide open, but I guess Wlad banked on the fact that he wasnt good or smart enough to do that, which he was obviously right.
Anytime Ibragimov threw the left, Wlad stepped back out of range or clinched. What was frustrating is that when he took the step back, he was out of Iggy's range, but Iggy was still in his, so he could have shot the right hand over the top and clocked him OR countered with the left hook, which he did once late in the fight.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I almost knocked over my beer when Mccline dropped Peter for the second time in the fight, I couldnt ****ing believe what I was seeing, I still cant believe Peter got through it and came back to win.
Very old tactic. You watch enough Camacho, you will see him catch, and bat down jabs and counter. If you put too much into batting down someones hand like that, you can get countered. Wlad was putting enough momentum into those batting movements that they were slaps, and doing so before Sultan commited to throwing anything. If he did that to a southpaw with a quick right hook, that slap could have been countered, so it was actually STUPID to do. Sultan puts his right hand up and waits for wlad to motion with his left shoulder to slap it down, and throws a right hook right over the slap.. I'm telling you, someone with skill could have pulled it off and made Wlad look like a bafoon.
Exactly, like I said in the other thread, a guy with better skills would of seen an open Wlad and would of countered him perfectly, and with Wlad weak chin the fight could have changed hands in an instant, I guess he thought Iggy didnt have the balls to try it.
Vlad has done that in the past, years ago, so have Vitali, it is sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Vlad looked good in that fight, compare with Ali/Young, Holmes, Spinks, Holmes, Cobb, Lewis Tua, etc.
