What do you think is the real reason that Lewis never fought a southpaw?

What do you think is the real reason that Lewis never fought a southpaw? It isn't as if he didn't have anyone around to fight. During his own era there was Moorer... then there was Sanders (who said that Lennox flat out told him that he always avoided him)... He dropped his IBF title to avoid fighting Chris Byrd, ect...

So, why do you think it is? I know that Lennox had issues with his balance and footwork. I wonder if he simply couldn't box against them. Maybe he just physically couldn't put it together. Funny, because I always pictured Chris Byrd making him look really bad if they ever fought. I kept picturing Lewis kinda tripping over his own feet, and just looking really bad even if he won. He said on air himself before that he had never fought one, ever... but had sparred a few and they were very difficult.

Do you think that it effects his All Time rating or legacy?

How can you avoid someone who never cracked the top 10 ratings until 2003, the year before Lennox's retirement? Lennox never avoided him, sanders simply wasn't good enough to get the fight. Sanders was not a world class fighter.

Tell that to Lennox, not me. Lennox even spoke about it in an interview after a pre fight press conference for Sanders/Vitali.

Just found this little bit as well. Remember, Lewis and Sanders are friends, and Lewis was even part of the management company that was managing Sanders... so it isn't like Sanders would be just making **** up and badmouthing him.

A fight Sanders pursued for many years which never came off was against Lennox Lewis. “I always wanted to get Lewis in the ring. I knew I had the beating of him. When I fought [Vitali] Klitschko, Lewis chatted a lot with me and he admitted that they avoided me and were concerned about fighting me. I appreciated that he was prepared to admit it to me personally. It meant that I must have meant something.”

Anyways... on to the point of the thread....

Because there were none outside of Chris Byrd ... and we all know this would have looked like Wlad-Byrd. It doesn´t effect his standing at all.

But because of this he would lose to Karl Mildenberger of course. :D

Moorer; If you manged Moorer, would you pick Lennox as an opponent? That's the last guy you'd want to face.

Byrd: Rarest of breeds. Willing to fight anyone anywhere at anytime. Problem is he doesn't sell tickets or PPV and would have to fight Lennox for like 1/18th the purse. Like say $ 9 million against $550k and that simply isn't going to happen once a champ is in the twilight of his career getting close to retirement.

Sanders; Lots of managers avoided putting their guy in with him. Like Byrd, minimal pull at the box office and was always the divisions who needs this guy? Just a terrible choice for an opponent on the risk vs. reward scale & a dozen more fiscally sensible fights to make instead.

Pretty much what you said - Lewis would have flattened Moorer in short order and Byrd would have stunk the place out. Sanders was just never in a position to have a legitimate shout for a shot at Lennox. Doesn't affect Lewis's legacy whatsoever.

I don't think it affects his standing, his standing is what it is. I can't rate speculation, i can only rate what he achieved. It does however, make for debate and discussion as to why.

I'm consistent with this line of thinking by the way. I apply it to Robinson when people ask if it takes from his standing that he never fought Burley. No, because i can't rate speculation. I can only rate what he did by losing an winning in the ring. If he would have lost to Burley in his prime then maybe that would take from his standing, but they never fought so we don't know. Same goes for Lewis and southpaws.

I could have sworn Joe Louis fought one southpaw in 69 fights.

There's your answer: only three happened to come along in the span of 14 years.
