Good boxer with heavy hands, and fought everybody. (Downside, short reach and cut easily). Seemed to be basically fearless when the going got tough.
Set traps and countered beautifully when facing fighters that came to him. Tough as nails. Was undersized for the division in both weight and reach. Strong contender in good era, still had mental lapses in important fights, was defeated by differing styles and wasn't always in top shape. Plus the easily cut skin. Fought everyone a true warrior
Ton of heart. Good counter punch . Entertaining guy . In other era's he'd have probably been champ at some point .
Crackling Left hook. Quickness, especially quicknhands and coordination. Tough chin and determination
Glad to see so many shoutouts to his counterpunching. For years he was considered a slugger because of his later career style change but he was at his best as a young counterpuncher fighting off the ropes.
A 'luring trap' counterpuncher. Great set of whiskers; though not a 'real' heavyweight banger could hurt you with the right or left hook. Unfortunately counterpunchers seem to get the short end of the stick, so to speak, with judges as evidenced by his 3-4 early draws. Downside? He often fought the other opponent's fight and was up against some of the best Heavies ever. Always wanted to 'Bang' with opponents. What was his record, something like 55-8-4 (correct me). two losses to Ali, two losses to Frazier, the Chuvalo anamoly, Ellis in the finals of the Elimination tournament (a boring fight, Jerry-"back me into the ropes and I'll counter your arse". Jimmy-"not! I'll stay in the center of the ring and box you"). Yawn! Slick Machen gave him his first loss when he was green. Norton? A last minute sub; I think Kenny was supposed to fight Bonavena then. By then? Cocaine use, divorce, probably early dementia setting in at that point. Prone to cuts but...who decked him? Patterson 1, Chuvalo? He was a couple of shots short of stopping ripped up, bloody George. Frazier 2, he was shot at that point. Alexander, the journeyman nailed him with a huge left hook. Upside? A one-sided whollop of Lyle, 10-2, Shavers, and Mac Foster, though Mac showed he, despite his big power, was clearly in over his class. Love Jerry; so sad to see him in such shape later in his career. RIP great warrior!!
Quarry had some things going for him. He was an excellent counter puncher with fast hands and a good left hook. Tough-minded, with the ability to take a punch. As Floyd Patterson once said, " Quarry doesn't know himself. He slugs when he should box, and he boxes when he should slug. " On the downside, he had too many uneven performances, had issues staying focused and was cut prone. You could argue Quarry could have been champion before or after his time. Is Quarry vs. Mac Foster or Buster Mathis out there on film or you tube?
