Deontay Wilder was the US national Gold Gloves champion in 2007. He won Olympic bronze in 2008.

He has now had 20 pro fights, and won all of them by KO. However he has yet to face a decent journeyman, except perhaps for Harold Sconiers.

Deontay is now age 26 and his manager says in 2012, he will be in with a better quality of opponent.

How good is Deontay? Is he a potential HW champion?

He is a Glass Jawed Joke and he's going to be brutally and embarrassingly KOed whenever he steps up and fights someone with a pulse. There is a reason that he is twenty fights in and still fighting drunks pulled off of Alabama honky tonk barstools and that reason is that his management knows he has no Chin. They'll have him fight ten or more of these flea market fight-caliber stiffs and then cash him out in a title fight for some worthless trinket belt.

He has the potential to be a titleholder, don't think he stands a chance against either of the Klitschko, but I think he can go quite far, personally I like him.

Deontay Wilder is talented, but he needs to step up his level of opposition soon, or he will never amount to much.

It's now 2012, he's had 20 pro fights, and so there's no excuse for him to continue to avoid decent journeymen. He needs to be fighting people like Michael Grant, Jason Estrada, and Dominick Guinn.

Hard to tell, his record has more padding than the walls in Ibeabuchi's room.

The big problem I see is how American HWs dont seem to get matched tough on the way up then get exposed when they step up, due to being given too many easy fights.

Deontay Wilder who is 20-0 (20KOs). Looks impressive, but who has he fought?

Now look at how much tougher the European HWs are matched on the way up

Tyson Fury in 17 fights has fought undefeated 16-0 Pajkic, undefeated 14-0 Chisora, undefeated 13-0 Nascimento, undefeated 12-0 Power and McDermott twice

Derek Chisora in 17 fights has fought undefeated 14-0 Fury, undefeated 16-0 Helenius, D Williams and S Sexton twice

Robert Helenius in 17 fights has fought L Brewster, A Levin, S Peter, S Liakhovich, D Chisora and undefeated 12-0 G Tony

Could it be because of soft matching on the way up, why American HWs have tended to crumble when facing decent European opposition who seem to be matched alot tougher on the way up?

    What do you think?

    Edit..
In this time Chisora had agreed to fight Wlad and is fighting Vitali next

ive watched boxing for a while and see alot of guys weed through bums early in their career as they rise... but Wilder is by far the worst prospect i have ever seen that has come out of the olympics with a medal. with the level of his opponents , he should be fighting every 3 weeks.... when tommy morrison, tyson, ray mercer, riddick bowe....they had 20 fights there first year and their opponents gradually got better...
i dont even see him ever getting a title shot, he will lose too many fights before that happens...he is that bad

Extremely talented, but still so damn raw after nearly 4 years as a pro. These cans are ******ing his growth. It's sink or swim time. He needs at least a C level HW for me to continue to believe. He should have signed with Top Rank...Their matchmakers would have had him in with respectable guys that wouldn't have beat him, but at least developed him. Needs a better trainer and management.

Deontay Wilder is another american hypejob for the american people, who need to have something to follow.......all the real top contenders and prospects nowadays are in (east)Europe, because of the lower standard of living which generates better boxers.

if moved properly and not hurried like Grant he will probably win a belt, when he is 30 or so the one if not both Klits may be retired the division will open up and i dont know if any of the other blue chips are head and shoulders above him by a far margin

he will learn and improve, he is a tall guy with a big punch, with the right style he can make himself unhittable and knock guys out

I think he will be an even bigger disgrace. He was nearly KOed against one of the bums he fought in Alabama and he was starched cold in the amateurs. If he doesn't want to take Kirkland's spot as the biggest Glass Jawed Fraud in Boxing he should definitely stick to fighting stiffs at Dirty Dick's Fight Night at the local strip club because he does not have any semblance of a Chin. What a shame that USA Boxing has come to this.:patsch

No need to rush him. Hard works done in the gym.

Expecting him to fight a live body after twenty pro fights is not rushing him, at all. At this point he should have faced somebody who at least has a winning record and he hasn't come close to doing that. He's still fighting drunks pulled off of barstools in Alabama honky tonks and that's because everyone knows his Chin is Pure Glass and they need to build his name and reputation as a KO machine before they cash him out against a name opponent.
