What do you think of Michael Spinks's win over Gerry Cooney?

On one hand, Cooney had fought sporadically since the Holmes fight, battling depression and substance abuse. The Spinks fight was the 4th fight in 5 years since the loss to Holmes, and first in a year. Cooney wasn't getting many rounds either as he was stopping opponents in quick fashion. The 238 that Cooney weighed for this bout was the heaviest of his career.

On the other hand, Spinks was giving up a lot of size. 3 inches in height, 5 inches in reach, and about 30 pounds in weight. Cooney was also a very hard hitter with a monster left hook, and decent skills. He had looked good in his last fight, taking out Gregg in no time. Spinks was clever and used efficient movement, moving side-to-side, then picking the right moment to launch that great jab. When Cooney did have success, Spinks came back strong the next round, hurting Cooney, and then stopping him with a barrage of punches.

    Your thoughts on the win?

One of my favs to review when I'm buzzin' good...... I taped it live back in '87 off PPV....

I had picked and bet 20 on Cooney, but Spinks put on a great display of boxing, etc...

Cooney was in good shape at 238 pounds. Cooney didn't look pale or gaunt, but he was rusty as a door-nail in a haunted house...... Cooney just couldn't let his hands go against Spinks.....

    Spinks KO5 Cooney...... 'Nuff said......

It was a good performance, considering that Spinks was only in his 3rd fight at 200 lbs, was taking on a big puncher, and dispatched him with little trouble. On the otherhand, as you already touched upon, Cooney had long fallen out of the ratings, was no longer active, showed up at a career high weight and had life style issues.. When we weigh the good with the bad, I would say that it averages out to being a decent win, but not a great one...

I watched this fight the other day. Cooney just did not let his hands go he was too tentative. Also, I remember reading him saying there was problems with the fight being on, off, on, off and then when he knew it was going to happen he had been boozing etc.

I know Spinks was a great fighter but in my opinion Conney had no excuse to lose this fight he had just about every single advantage possible. I just shake my head watching him get stopped by Spinks. Cooney simply was never taught how to clinch when he was hurt or buzzed by Victor Valle I just don't understand it.

After watching that fight a few times, I agree that it didn't appear as though Gerry was there to fight. He almost looked like a substitute going through the motions. It would have helped had he been 10 lbs lighter, and fought a tuneup before hand.

Michael Spinks' most impressing win . The narrow doubted win over an older Holmes comes the second.

I think it was a damned good fight for Spinks and he just outright beat the **** out of Conney. This fight discredits Cooney in my books..it hurt his overall legacy..because there was no damned way Gerry had any business losing to, never mind being trounced so badly by an exlightheavyweight champ..and considering the big size and power advantage that he had over Spinks. Losing to Holmes was no disgrace, and he was really shot vs Foreman, but this was really disgraceful to get beat up like he did by Spinks..if he had any chin, heart, smarts, whatever he would have at least gone the distance with Spinks.

What a load of bull****, in Spinks' first fight with Holmes he clearly outpointed him, I know Larry was 35 but keep in mind he was 48-0 and it was meant to be an easy fight - a truly great win imo.
The second fight was the controversial decision.

Good victory for Spinks. Cooney was wasted potential though. He'd have accomplished more if he'd been brought along more competently.

Should not have happened. Cooney had a lot of potential but had some personal problems that hindered him. Cooney actually gave holmes a good fight so my thinking was that he should've been able to take spinks.

By the spinks fight, however, he was totally unfocused and the substance abuse had begun to take it's toll, robbing him of his abilities.

Good showing by Michael against Gerry, though he should've manned up and fought Tony Tucker instead.

pretty good win for spinks, it shows that he can take on a big heavyweight with good power.
cooney was rusty and didn't really get any quality fights on his way to spinks though

Cooney didn't really look sharp, but one can argue that Spink's movement made him look alot worse than he was. He just couldn't handle Micheal's speed and that's really what won the fight. He just kept getting beat to the punch.

Overall I'd say it was a pretty decent win, because all things aside; Cooney could still punch.

I agree with this. I was at this fight in Atlantic city and it reminded me of when I saw Jerry get TKO'd in the amateurs by Light heavyweight Johnny Davis. I had seen the 6"6 Cooney win the middleweight GG title a year or so Earlier. Gerry had impressive power in the hook, a strong left arm,one of the best to the head and body, it was a freakish arm, the left arm much bigger than his right arm. but Gerry was a frail guy as big as he was, in mind and body

Cooney should be ashamed of himself.
