Cooney was just disinterested and didn't care.

A stoppage that came due to Cooney's bad condition than anything else.
Both fought in a lousy manner . Ugly fight , despite the stoppage and despite the lack of exceptional fouls .
All in all the Spinks-Holmes-Cooney fights were horrible fights fought by 3 overrated fighters whose records benefited an extremely weak HW division + a protected upbringing in Cooney's case and some ducks and bad decisions in Holmes' case. You really need to watch them fight to know how much they sucked . Their records will not tell you about it.

No matter how rusty Gerry was, the punch is usually the last thing to go, and Foreman discovered that Cooney maintained his power right to the end. Gerry was also a very fast starter, while Michael was a notoriously slow one. Cooney reasonably could have been expected to break Michael in half with a single hook to that skinny body.

Given all that, yes, I think it was a great win. Furthermore, I think it cancels out the subsequent loss to Tyson. Sooner or later, Michael was bound to get blown out like that, but incredibly, he prevented Gerry from being the one to do it. As far as I'm concerned, he gets a free pass for Tyson by virtue of stopping Cooney.

Spinks did a job on him.

C00ney was not a good opponent in 1987. Anyone in the top 10 would have knocked him out, most likely.

A "no big deal" win for Spinks considering: ****ey was hung over from cocaine and alcohol when he fought Spinks. Real stupid for ****ey and obviously not the fault of Spinks. At least when ****ey came back for Foreman, Gerry was cleaned up.

I thought Spinks fought a great fight. He used a great strategy of moving then letting go bursts of combinations, then moving again. ****ey was not the fighter he was in his prime though.

Spinks was brilliantly managed as a heavyweight. He fought Holmes at just the right time. Then made big money with low risk fights until getting the massive payday against Tyson.

Yeah, that's true, because if a Tony Tucker, or Carl Williams got their hands on him, it would've been a wrap.

It was the first home pay per view fight I ever ordered. I recorded it on BETA. I think it cost 39.99 which I thought was outrageous. Little did I know it would become the norm.

****ey had a 4" height advantage over Sponks, not 3".

****ey was an unusual case of not that strong but hit like a truck. Sort of the opposite of Foreman, who also hit extremely hard, but was freakishly strong. Forman said Williams, Lyle & ****ey hit him the hardest.

Also ****ey just did not throw the right much at all.
He was much more one armed than Frazier.
This was a real flaw. Likely one in his trainers too.

Instead of the obnoxious "not the white man, the right man" hype proceeding the championship bout, they should have tied up his left & taught him some more effective punches & techniques,

It was a good win for Spinks given the size disparity, but I can think of a few people I would rather have seen him fight.

Spinks Tucker is the fight I would really have liked to see.

Probably, because like everyone else, you didn't know ****ey was hungover.... Apparently, ****ey was messed up outside the ring quite a bit.
