Definitely interesting. First time I seen this training method. If boxing was this format:- - Duran would never have lost to Sugar Ray Leonard. - Andy Ruiz Jr would have beaten AJ in their rematch - Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight would have been more interesting. - James Toney and Artur Beterbiev would be deadly in this format. Had they fought in this format would be a tough fight. Mentally the tyre forces the fighter to defend without "running". The fighter is forced to hold his ground, hold the centre of the ring, and be more mentally prepared for dealing with punches at close quarters.
Tbh, I dont like it. The whole idea of boxing is NOT to do that. You get in, you hit, you get out without being hit. That's what you have to do. You should only be in the distance while punching, the rest of the time you should be off the distance. (yes, good old times are over, no more roberto durán for us) I can understand that it could help to improve some skills, but I wouldnt abuse this method very much. Your fighters could get more vices and bad habits than good practices. I'm not a trainer, though. So my opinion is worth what it is worth here... nothing. Regarding the body punches, it's not hard to connect a body punch when you are inside this distance. What's hard is to connect it when you are NOT inside this distance (or at least I always found it incredibly difficult to do it). When you are toe to toe, there is no mistery, you punch the body and that's all, you have to do nothing. I dont understand all that "body punching" stuff in the comments section of this video by the guy who uploaded it.
I have seen this numerous times over the years. I believe that the first time that I saw it was from the gym in Kansas- Garden City?- that spawned Rios and Ortiz. It is a gimmick. You don't move like that inside. It makes you very front foot heavy and dependent upon your front foot to move. That isn't how it works. You don't let your front foot get tied up with his.
You are right, even when you are in the short distance you dont move like that. It would make more sense to put both fighters in a 2mX2m ring if you want them to fight only in this distance rather than to tie their front foot, which is something completely bogus. At least in a micro-ring they would be able to position, balance and move correctly.
Other then that, I've seen a video on youtube with guys doing this. Seems beneficial for inside fighting/body work.
It'll make you tough lol I guess it can help with leaning and maintaining a good guard and not getting lazy with your hands and chin It may have a place in limited usage like a situational type of sparring
