In December 2007 Mayweather left at the top of the sport after beating Ricky Hatton, his biggest rival of his career at the time. He stated that he had nothing else to prove and left welterweight threats at the time Cotto, Williams, Margarito and Mosley to dry. He also stated that he made enough money to live the rest of his life happy, his legacy was already cemented, boxing doesnt interest him anymore, and he wasnt going to let the sport retire him.

Fast forward to May 1st 2009 the day before Pacquiao/Hatton. Mayweather announces his comeback against Mexican lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Mayweather goes on to put on a clinic and gets put on the spot by Shane Mosley to fight him afterwards. After stalled negotiations with a Pacquiao fight PBF goes on to fight Shane Mosley and win in an impression fashion. Now after the second stalled negotiations for the Pacquiao fight because in Mayweather's words doesnt have the "urge" makes you wonder why did he come back in the first place?

    Possible reasons:
    • Missed the attention
    • Needed the money (IRS problems?)
    • Thought a Pac fight was HUGE easy money at the time
    • Wanted to accomplish more in the sport
    • Enjoys boxing
    • The welterweight division didnt look so dangerous anymore
Im sure it was a combination of most or all of the above but Im sure there is one more compelling reason than the others as to why he came back.

Which do you think it was?

    Glory

Floyd clearly had the money and fame when he retired.

He was in need of money and thought that he could easily beat Pac who was the biggest name at the time. But things go horribly wrong when Pac starts to destroy guys he was supposed to lose to, and I'm talking about DESTROYS them. Pac even beats the crap out of the guy Floyd retired to avoid. Then Floyd realizes he made a mistake by coming back and the ducking began...

Combination of things probably. Hopefully he sorts his problems and we see the Pac fight.

probably a combination of missed being in the spotlight, missed the sport, wanted more money, and a smart option/fight against jmm was opened.

Hence the nick name. I hope he came back for legacy too, and fights Pac or Martinez at 154.

Obviously, he thought it was an easy payday against Pac. Floyd made the announcement to fight Marquez right before Pac-Hatton fight. Then....

... Pac sent Hatton to unconsciousness (Floyds eyeballs fell off), then...
... TKO's De La Hoya (Floyds left ball fell off), then...
... TKO's Cotto (Floyds right ball fell off), then...
... Clottey (Floyds ***** fell off), then...
... Margarito (Floyd undergoes sex transplant).

. As I was writting what I wrote I realized the double meaning.
I do think that there is a lot of ego involved. However I think he is mostly in it for the $.

    The most important....

Listen to the man, he wasn't going to let the game retire him...he needed the time off to heal those injuries, rejuvenate worn and inflammed tendons, ligaments and cartilage (remember those brittle hands, the chronically inflammed extensor tendons, the inflammed glenohumeral cartilage from repeated blows to the left shoulders and lumbosacral disc from repeated rotation/flexion/extension of the upper body about the lumbosacral axis), a man who has the best gym, advanced nutritionist, physiologist, orthopeadists and physiatrists money can by, from someone whose whole family believe in better living through chemistry. He looked fitter and bigger than ever when he weighed in for the Marquez fight, having trouble making the weight limit with bulging muscles...what better way to avail yourself of the best peds money can buy during a sham retirement period when you are not subjected to public, journalistic or commission inquiries/urine testings. And what better way when the challenge is a bit too intimidating to buy additional time and use the old tactic of the 'pot calling the kettle black', turning the table to deflect any suspicion that he in fact is the ped abuser!
