im 6'2 270 and 19 years old...i was planning on training in a home gym in my basement for about 3-4 months before i go to a gym to spar and get a fight.. id teach myself with instructional videos and such.. well i talked to my best friends dad who boxes and says that the boxing gym he goes to is 100 a month.. which if i train 5 days a week comes out to 5 dollars a day i train which doesnt seem that bad.. should i go into the gym with barely any experience and learn from the start... or should i train myself slightly and wait till i lose about 50 pounds to go to the boxing gym... im not a fat ass just have a gut.. alot of muscle... he told me itd be dumb to teach myself because if i teach myself something wrong itll be really hard to break.. and plus ill be able to cut down to 220 easier
skill wise youll learn almost zilch from the internet. It does help to get some fitness before you walk through the doors of the boxing gym but its not essential as that is why you are going! Just join it and find out
Your friends father is 100% correct, all you can possibly teach yourself is bad habits. The idea that you have to show up at a gym in shape is also flawed, that's what gyms are for.
Exactly, its a lot easier to start from nothing. Than to have to unlearn bad habits, then start from nothing. Best thing to do before you go to a boxing gym is cardio.
while i agree with you i do think its alot easier if your already in shape. Eg i went the first time to a boxing gym really out of shape and found i was sooo gassed i was struggling to concentrate on technique and skills! However the second time i re-joined a couple years ago i was in very good shape and the fitness side of things wasnt difficult and i could completely focus on skills. I guess it depends on the gym set up and how its run. But i found it much easier going in there and concentrating on technique and skills and doing my fitness training elsewhere as i can only make it the boxing gym 2-3 times a week
Just go the gym buddy. Loads of guys just start going to boxing gyms purely to lose weight. But there are some terrible coaches about, and in some cases you'd actually learn more online. Just make sure you find a good coach.
