I’m expecting a few ‘not fight in Saudi’ comments here but I’m asking from a in-ring tactical perspective. Does he have any tricks in his bag that means he can do things differently to take a clear win or is this just a case of two very evenly matched fighters and Bivol has to hope the judges like what he does more a second time around?
Just different judges that don't count blocked punches as scored, nothing else really. Improve his input a bit and pace himself a bit better, nothing else. Still Bivol has said he can be much better and do much better, so i believe him.
He said it himself, he needs to be perfect and try to won every single round. How can you become undisputed if you are not controling the ring and the opponent, he was not active in the second half of the fight and was only moving, not jabbing and attacking at the same time.
A more consistent work rate. Regularly double and triple jab instead of throwing singles and moving off admiring his work. Beterbiev looked most ineffective when Bivol would throw consistently followed by immediate defensive manoeuvres. AB is used to throwing with the opponent closer up (as he always wins) so you can't let him set up with any consistency. Easier said than done when you've got Beterbiev pressing on you though!
Ironically, given the critcisim he had for being safety-first in last 10 or so fights, I feel he needed to stick to his jab and 1/2 reset formula more, and avoid over committing, I feel he stung Artur into activity on a couple of occasions where he would have been better to keep with the jab 1/2 and avoid exchanges - even though he did well in many of these. I feel he was nervous at the beginning, possibly due to the intimidation factor, and know how strong and hard Artur is, and I feel he expended a lot of nervous energy, that he might be better with in a return having gone the distance and been v close to a win. In summary:- Start with less nervous / twicthy movement, try to hold centre ring more, using the jab Invest more to Beterbiev's body early, especially the straight right, vary the jab more and don't headhunt too much Do not overcommit on combinations and flurries Pace himself better (assuming he can get the nervous energy under control) Keep the jab 1/2 reset more active, when he was executing this it was really reducing Arturs success massivley All easier said than done, and one has to give credit to Beterbiev, as maybe Dmitry did try some of the above, but felt he had to sit down on his punches more, try and deter Artur more etc. I think the key thing he can take away is that he came through the 12 rounds, and had ghreat spells of success that he can build on and be more confident going into the fight.
The two big things that lost Bivol the fight were letting Beterbiev control the pace of the fight and letting Beterbiev outjab him. Bivol needs to use his footwork and keep the fight in the middle of the ring. He also needs to not be afraid to let his hands go, since he’s never going to beat Beterbiev by being too cautious.
Been saying this before but I think Bivol needs to be the come forward aggressor and push Beterbiev on the back foot to give him a better chance at getting the nod. Problem with that is it puts him at greater risk of getting hit but with the judges favoring the come forward aggressor I think he has no choice at this point.
Negotiate for a bigger ring.......which is now unfortunately out of the question....more cardio Hard to say as his performance last night was an A- at least IMO
Bivol never got caught cleanly and I believe that gave him longevity in the fight. So no need to change much as IMO he fought beautifully last night sans the 11th
