If Canelo does lose it changes the entire narrative surrounding his 'greatness'

There would be a 4th fight, or at least negotiations of one. Hopefully GGG would retire!

Does it really? GGG is an exceptional talent. Undefeated outside the lone defeat to his rival. The longest reigning MW Champ with the most consecutive title defenses. And unlike Bernard Hopkins who he is considered tied with for most consecutive title defenses, GGG had a consecutive KO streak for most of the consecutive title defense run. If Canelo loses to GGG, that's not a bad loss. People are acting like because GGG is 40, that only GGG can gain from this fight.

If we look at how many fans GGG has on this forum, at how many people on here rate him and hold him in high regard. Why then if Canelo loses, would that destroy Canelo? He would still have the ability to rematch Bivol, which is the biggest fight at 175 and the easiest one to make if Bivol and Beterbiev do not fight for Undisputed, which seems like that will not be happening. There's a scenario here of Canelo losing to GGG but then going back to 175 and beating Bivol and possibly beating Beterbiev down the line for Undisputed at 175. That realistically could happen. And in the scenario of GGG becoming Undisputed at SMW, he could reign at 168 in his 40s, and with GGG carrying on at 168 that keeps the door open for a 4th fight.

If GGG wins, even in controversial fashion (close decision for example), that's a mssive win for GGG but it's not a bad loss for Canelo. I mean yes it would hurt and would lower his value, and this forum would go cookoo, but would such a loss be so devastating to cause Canelo to retire? I can't see that. It would be a big blow to his career and would complete a winless year, which no one would have expected. But would it really change the narrative about his greatness? In my mind, it would do more to enhance GGG's greatness than to detract from Canelo's. And if Canelo were to lose to GGG, the series would be even 1-1-1 after 3 fights, so that would surely create a need for the fans for a 4th fight to break the tie.

A lot of the GGG fans that I encounter on here are not being completely honest about the whole situation, namely how good GGG still is at 40, and that however you rate his resume, the man has arguably never been beat. Certainly he's never been beat "convincingly". Beating GGG even at this stage is arguably the best win right now south of 175. If Canelo wins, fans will claim GGG was old, but that doesn't matter to Canelo and to most people who aren't fanboys. Canelo even addressed that point in a recent intreview, saying that he doesn't care if fans think GGG is old. He knows how good GGG still is. While GGG is no longer at his physical peak, he has maintained and preserved himself over the years without a sharp decline, and in addition to that mentally he's much more seasoned fighter than he was before he fought Canelo.

If we're honest, being in there 2X with Canelo has matured GGG as a fighter. He never had to swim in such deep waters before, and after drawing and losing to him, this has to be a motivating factor for GGG, to stay in shape. GGG knows that for him, and for his fans, this is a must win fight. The hunger for each of them to win in this 3rd fight and feed their egos so they can prove to the world and to themself that they are better than their rival is a big motivating factor. So we need to be very aware that GGG now is every bit as valuable of a win as he was 4-5 years ago. So lets not low ball what a Canelo win over him would mean or over exaggerate how devastating a loss to GGG would be. Whoever loses this fight, it will be devastating OK. But Canelo is not the kind of fighter who would retire after a loss. Canelo still seems to have a long way to go in the sport, he is very capable of fighting at a high level probably well into his late 30s. He doesn't seem to be the kind of guy that gets discouraged after a loss. Frankly I think GGG would take a loss here a lot harder than Canelo would.

Even I have my doubts that Golovkin can pull this off. I think he's slowed down a lot and while he looked formidable against Murata, he also looked hell of slow. Slow is the last thing you want to be against Canelo, he will eat you for breakfast.

Yes but even at 40 years old, is there a better win to be had south of 175 than GGG?

On name, no. In practise, maybe Benavides.

Very little chance he looses to GGG on the cards. He should have at least 1 loss if not 2. An older slower GGG isn't KOing him either unless Canelo has slipped completly so I see a Canelo decision and then loosing to Bivol again if he try's to go up in weight again. It wasn't a close fight VS Bivol.

    A lot of it, yes.

Canelo is a great fighter no doubt. But i think he has hit his ceiling.

If Canelo were to lose and his stock is lowered, it would be the fault of GGG'S haters that try to belittle his accomplishments, you can't have it both ways. I've said it forever, GGG is a bad man and has no fear of Canelo. I hope Canelo keeps poking the bear. It will be a beautiful thing.

My thoughts exactly , and depending on how GGG looks there are probably more fighters under 175 that are better than Golovkin at this moment in time.

Let's be honest, the scorecards have already been filled out and laminated. Regardless of Golovkin's performance, Canelo will win 7-5, and unfortunately GGG will be LLL against canelo. The only way Golovkin wins is by knockout and he's likely too old to put canelo away like that.
