Question for classic fans: What does Canelo have to do to be an all time great? I know he is an active fighter but i would prefer this question be kept in the classic section since fans in this section are generally much more informed on boxing history Canelo is one of my favourite fighters to watch today. I love the combination of speed, power, counter punching and strong chin that he possesses. However, i hate that his team blatantly ducked GGG when GGG was in his prime. On top of that, he was given a gift draw vs an aging Golovkin in their first fight and he barely won the second. I could see someone scoring the second a draw or a narrow GGG win. Regardless, it isn't convincing. Does Canelo have a chance at being a genuine atg or will he be remembered as a very good fighter who was the beneficiary of favourable judges and favourable match ups?
No. A man who stacks hand wraps, pays judges, takes PEDs, uses every weight manipulation trick in the book and stacks everything else you can think of in his favour, on top of cherry picking the worst champions in the division will never be an ATG.
He probably needs some legitimate, uncontroversial wins over prime/young contenders who are comfortable at whatever weight the fight is made at. That would be a good start.
Well,Canelo fought 1 proven ATG in Mayweather Jr. who's is a natural Jr.lightweight. that had shown very little punching power at the weight they fought at. Canelo lost almost every rd. That's a bad start to proving greatness.
For a start he must beat prime top fighters (not washed up, not welters, not too old, not Rocky Fieldings). And beat them convicingly
I agree. However, the second one was much closer, and I could see someone scoring it for Canelo slightly. I scored the first 9-3 for GGG and the second 7-5 for GGG.
Head-to-head, we're seeing the best of Canelo now, and frankly, I don't think it's good enough to warrant ATG status. He's a really good fighter in a relatively mediocre era at middleweight and super middleweight. GGG at this age is nothing historically special at all (it's arguable if he ever was), and Canelo barely got by him, needing a gift in the first fight. He was also clearly not ATG-level at 154 having squeaked by Lara, edging Trout, and getting utterly dominated by Mayweather. Canelo's legacy will be that of a very good fighter who beat a bunch of good to really solid fighters, but never had a convincing win over a great one, let alone a true all-time great. If you heavily weigh depth and numerical accomplishments, he could be an ATG in that sense I suppose. I tend to think he's a bit manufactured though despite obviously being a damn good talent and a hell of a fighter.
I agree In a way he reminds me of Calzaghe. Completely different style but his team appears unwilling to take on the best while they are in their primes.
Stop GGG in the rematch and somehow convince Ward to fight him and beat Ward, and take on Saunders and have some title defenses in some of the belts he wins.
