Yeah, this sounds about right. My girl is a Venezuelan (hopefully the same culture, otherwise I am a clear racist, sorry) and whenever I'm at her family's house for an event of some kind it is ridiculously noisy and dancey and whatever and when I just want to hang out and chill out they all look at me like I karate chopped their grandmothers or something. Makes sense.
I agree that Tito was a special fighter and, yes, it's an oversimplification and just flat out wrong to say he couldn't beat a boxer. This kind of BS is on the same level as clowns that claim all you had to do to beat Tyson was to stand up to him and not get bullied. But what you call 'the end of his career', I call him stepping up a level. You could say Hopkins was too big for him I spose but to me it looked like he got outsmarted by Hopkins. ODLH and Winky were well within his weight range and they beat him pretty comfortably. But they are also great fighters. Cotto's resume is under-respected. Mosley, Judah, Quintana, Clottey, Urkal, Malinaggi, Corely are all good scalps when taken as a whole.
I don't buy into this BS that Cotto is not liked. I was in MSG for the Clottey fight and the place was going wild for him. When Michael Buffer went, "...115-112 for the winner by split decision from Caguas...", the place just erupted. It was unreal! I must admit I know nothing about Boricua culture and all, but I find it hard to believe that he is not popular on the island. I will be there for the Foreman fight in June and I'm sure the support for Cotto will be stronger than ever. He needs it now, he must push himself hard in the ring and us the fans must push him and give him strength from the outside. It is not going to be an easy fight for him. Peace
For sure, Hatton is a phenomenon. Danny Green has a similar thing going on in Australia but with far less achievements. The humble, working-class, white every-man is certainly well received.
I think the guy is liked. To me Cotto represents everything good about boxing. The guy has proved himself a warrior again and again and has been one of the most dominant fighters of the last five years or so. But given his acheivements and the fierce PR boxing pride he hasn't been lauded as much as you'd expect. Whilst he has a good fan base, to me it seems like the broader PR public are ambivalent or even suspicious of him and he just doesn't have nor desire the mass appeal.
Cotto has a playful side as shown in 24/7 but he has to really know you in order for him to show that side. He seems like a keep to myself kind of guy that only expresses himself in front of his close buddies. Never can I imagine Cotto as the "life of the party".
Sounds about right. Ricans like Tito and Juanma b/c theyre passionate, simple down to earth guys, and they go out smiling and hanging out all the time. Cotto is more reserved, militaristic like his father. They also dont really like Santos b/c he's like a surfer-type guy.
why cotto is no beloved as trinidad, for example you can go to any casual store see both fighters and cotto wont even look at you, but tito will talk and joke with you like someone of his own family. You feel like **** with cotto and feel like a super-friend with tito....you choose.
