First of all I want to say no disrespect to Germans in general whatsoever. I'm only talking about the German promoters (of course). And a lot of fans whom are attending all those shows. I mean.. I can recall some big/huge fights.. but lately I only see sh*t boring shows. Between women AND men. Sturm vs AA is THE fight to happen but it still hasn't and it seems like no-one in Germany is demanding it!! About most of the other shows: NO trans-American boxing fan would attend something like that. All those boring fake ''title'' defences of Erdei, Sturm, Abraham. They hail Sylvester as a god just and he is not the only one. My conclusion is that it's easy money making for Sauerland and Universum. This is my opinion, what's yours!!!?
The one thing about germany is they at least respect boxing and its very big over there. I wish it was like that here but the common person doesn't care and just shits on professional boxing. Germany is a good place for european fighters to build their names up and make money.
packed houses virtually everytime 10 million viewers on tv fighters getting big paycheck`s rest of the world`s promoters looking on in envy.
As you might know, I attend some events in Germany - most Sauerland promoted shows and I think that they are worth the money. Povetkin vs. Chambers was a fine showing (and I saw alot of Americans in attendance). Abraham vs. Gevor was a real good, entertaining event - maybe the best in '07 (might had only been topped by the Abraham, Huck double header). Also Ahmet Öner's arena had some nice cards in '07 - especially the JC Gomez vs. McCall card. Referring to the other promotion which is Universum (except Spotlight Boxing, maybe), they went downhill. I can't remember one interesting event that Kluas-Peter Kohl staged in '07 - plus he seems to have alot of differentials with his fighters these days.
Your criticism might be valid, but you also need to understand this: Most of the fights in Germany are not aimed at serious boxing fans, but at a casual Saturday night prime time (free tv) audience. For them the opponent is more or less irrelevant, since they don't know any other boxers in that weight class anyway.
I dont think so. You guys have to understand the big money in boxing dont come from people watching on TV, not when its free:good . Dm was the Highest paid boxer in germany yet he wasnt even in the top 15 highest paid fighters. That would tell me that the fighters are making a killing. Some one is but it isnt the fighters.
You might be right that huge multi-million dollar fights only come together through PPV (Mayweather-de la Hoya, Mayweather-Hatton, etc.), but regular PPV events like Pacquiao-Marquez don't earn the fighters that much more than totally random title defences of Sturm or Abraham in Germany for instance. They both get at least one million euros per fight (~$1.5m), Klitschko earns even considerably more with his tv contract in Germany alone. On the other hand, Pacquiao and Marquez 'only' got $3 and $1 million respectively (according to the LA Times).
This is historical though. Heavyweights have always earned more than anyone else so may not necessarily be due to German TV. As for German fighters though, it has been a while since a truly world class one has come through the ranks. Which is a great shame for a country where boxing is so popular
Although they're very organised in putting on shows we also get biased refereeing, appauling judging, hometown decisions and the level of boxers isn't great.
I,too, love German pro boxing. You can see all fights for free on the big German tv channels. The entrance fee for a big fight event is usually very moderate.Once I had to pay a small fortune to watch Danny Williams and a horrible undercard in England. The fighters in the paid ranks love German pro boxing ,too.Where else can they collect such decent paychecks.
:huh ppv in america is absolutley killing the sport and will go on killing the sport until there are no main attractions left. 3 years time dlh/mayweather/hopkins/wright/toney/holyfield/taylor/ all retired. on free to air tv more people would watch tiddlywinks than actually watched pavlik v taylor 2. american fighters have to be exciting champs before they get paid european money. for example valuev v chagaev is getting $4.5 million purse split. thats not a bad purse for 2 such fighters using free to air tv money. basically an all european tv fight , yet if these 2 fighters were american this would get 1/10th the money for there purses. hopkins and wright basically got the exact same purse as sven ottke fought for fighting a heavy bag. granted no 20 million paydays in germany like there can be in america , but then again once the OAP circut is finished i cannot see any 20 million a fight american fighter on the horizon. IMO for anything but the highest elite superstar american boxer , european promoters pay better.
A heavy like McCline even tried to get a contract with a German promoter. Makes you really think! McCline is the embodiment of a fighter who cant be sold to the european audience.Nevertheless,he really wanted to fight for a German promoter.
yep in the uk everything is a lot more expensive sport wise. i have seen 1lehudson post he beleives it costs $10 to get into an english boxing event. he really has no idea at all of what things cost in the uk. $10 would not even buy you 1 gallon of diesel $10 would not even buy you 20 ciggerettes $10 would not even cover 100 yards in a london taxi the average euro as a whole earns a lot more than the average american boxer, but the top 0.01 of american boxers earn a lot more than everybody.
