What does it mean when they say a fighter "ruined" another fighter?

We hear it all the time. Right now, people are saying that Pavlik "ruined" Miranda and that he hasn't been the same since. Just what exactly does this mean?

Does it mean that because Pavlik laid a good physical beating on Miranda that his physical abilities along with his mental capacity has been eroded somewhat? Or does this also have to do with a fighter's loss in confidence? Or a combination of both?

Yeah i think is a combination of both. The perfect example of that was the Trinidad-Vargas fight. Vargas was never the same after that fight.

its mosly about confidence. i personally dont feel that pavlik ruined miranda btw. miranda after all may have scored 2008 KO of the year against david banks.

a good example of runined is what happened to lacy, now he's never gonna be the same unfortunately

Sometimes it's correct, other times it's a scramble for an excuse to downplay a victory. Have fun trying to spot which is which ;)

Some fighters just aren't quite what they were cracked up to be in the first place, so instead of having their abilities decreased they've just been exposed to a degree.

Julio Caesar Chavez ruined Meldrick Taylor. Best explanation I could think of.

I think there is a fine line that is hard to differentiate between "ruined" and "exposed".

And that was clearly from a physical standpoint right? In the sense that the beating he took actually affected his performance after that fight.

Remember how everyone was saying how Quintana "exposed" Williams in their first fight? Well, just goes to show, even very smart boxing fans can jump to conclusions. I do recall most people in here saying that this was the case. But look at what Williams did in their 2nd fight.

Most of the time its bull**** to discredit somebody. Although Lacy looks to be the classic case of recent times. We just need to see him struggle with a few more limited opponents with that mentally scarred look about him to confirm it.

Perfect example right there, the beating was far too brutal to expect anything special from Lacy anymore. 12 rounds of HELL for Lacy, Calzaghe just took his confidence that night.
