What does it mean when they say a fighter "ruined" another fighter?

I think that's fair. Of course, RJJ fans like myself, will point to the fact that him having to lose 25+ lbs of muscle AND the possibility that Tarver fought RJJ at just the right time when some of his natural abilities went away had a part in it. But there is no doubt that Tarver "ruined" RJJ from a mental standpoint. RJJ was never the same mentally when entering the ring. He was no longer "Superman". His fight against Glen Johnson was disgraceful as he just covered up and didn't fight back. It's as if he was shell shocked.

So i think in this case, "ruined" does apply.

Marvis Frazier got "double ruined" by fighting two great Hvyweight Champs..Holmes & Tyson.

Total rounds fought less then two.

Unfortunately, that is his only two losses.

The fighter is never the same as before the fight.

Haven't seen Darchinyan fight recently, was he ruined by Donaire?

    Chavez - Taylor
    Trinidad - Vargas and others

Usually it occurs from a severe beatdown of a durable fighter. Probably why Darchinyan is not ruined, but mentally he may never be the same again.

Took his opponents confidence and heart away ... exposed a major flaw in their fight game ... or took away their sense of invincability --

I know that confidence and invincability go hand and hand but in the fight game those can be two totally different things.

No one goes into a fight with the mindset to lose but when they do lose and lose badly it can ruin every part of them as a fighter.

Donaire ruined Darchinyan . Vic almost was almost counted out against a light punching opponent in his last fight.

I think some of those Philly gym-wars had something to do with Taylor's demise

Lacy underwent surgery on his shoulder.
For a boxer, that specific operation means it is impossible to come back from.
The reason Lacy will never come back is not because he received a boxing lesson from Joe,but because at best he will only be able to his his shoulder for 95 percent. At the highest professional level that just isn't enough.

Vargas vs Trinidad is the classic example as Vargas had proven ability.
Lacy is not as he was an unproven Hype job.

And too many tough fights in general. I'm sure sparring played a role in his brain damage, as well as it has with Norris, Benitez, and other fighters.

Taylor was already declining when he fought Norris (he'd struggled a lot in an earlier fight against G. Brown) and that just made it a lot worse. Then a few months later came the Espana fight.

Taylor was still a good fighter though after Chavez. You can't expect a lot of people here to know that though. It takes either living through the era or doing some research about boxing, which is more than we can expect of the "Legendary Nights" Era of Internet Boxing Fans.

why do people say that lacy has been ruined when he only had two fights sine losing to Joe ????

He injured his shoulder in the 3 round of the Tsypko fight and was out more then a year ..
Then came a year later after surgery, bulkier and slower in the Manfredo fight , there is just not enough evidence to say that Joe ruined Lacy. I know some UK fan would like to think that joe did ruined lacy but the fact remain we haven't seen enough of lacy injury and legal problem to make that conclusion..

Beside David reed ,Joe Lipsey and the late Davy More are poster boys for out classed and ruined fighter ..
