I think Manny can be a crossover star. People know who he is in the States. He just needs to stop with these ppv's against overmatched opponents.

I dont think so, if PAC will continue to demonstrate such performance people will love him so much... it is good for boxing since he fought every fight gallantly.:D

Yeah, but the thread doesn't ask about DLH level crossover appeal. It ask just what it takes to be a crossover star. If the standard is DLH, then nobody boxing right now will ever get to that level. We might as well not even discuss the issue anymore.

I think it detracts from their careers as fighters though, as they lose focus. Mayweather being a perfect example.

I think its great that guys like Cotto have no interest in this. It means they are dedicated to becoming the best fighters they can possibly be.

Agreed ..I mean think of Morales and Barrera if they had soley fought on PPV I don't think they would be as big as they were .

So how important are looks to get the crossover appeal? Because DLH looked live a movie star but then again Tyson was mainstream too.

Tyson appealed to our basic instincts. He was marketed as a machine, a beast, a monster. His appeal lay there....Also, boxing was more mainstream then. DLH's look helped him survive during boxing's less mainstream era. I think we are about to go on an upswing though. ESPN has been following boxing a bit more now, and in the US, that's key.

Does Olympic glory help? Because SRL and DLH had gold medals and we know how they got.

Ive just wondered which point in Mayweathers career shot him into the spotlight? it had to be his fight with DLH. Before that how many casual boxing fans and non boxing fans knew him?
