Since every one is willing to thown Pac into the top ten, I decided to see what you guys think what Pac has done to be rank in MY top ten. My top ten has no real order, but I thown out Barney Ross, first man to hold 3 weight divsion titles at the same time, (He held the welterweight, lightweight, and jr welterweight title at the same time in 33, 4 years before Armstrong repeated the feat. No one brings it up because Nat didnt belive in the jr titles at the time) Beat legends in McLarin and Caniz. Also a good win over Petrolle, retire on a sad not in loseing to Armstrong, perhaps Pac may find his Armstrong down the road.
Well, Pac covered more weightclasses and will end up with a longer longevity. You may count that in for thim. The difference in resume is big though. Ross beat two Top20 p4p greats and numerous other HoFer and beltholder. Pac beat some future HoFers though, 4 I think, maybe 5, which is great for this era. IMO when he retires Pac will be a Top20 atg, he already is close enough IMO, while Ross is a Top15, borderline Top10, one. I think Pac has a decent chance to overtake McLarnin but not much to take Ross or Canzi.
Ross didnt have 17 weight classes to choose from lol, plus one title per weight class in Ross's day I think had Ross been around today, he might beat his old record with all the titles flying around. So I not sure really were to draw the line pound for pound wise here. Ross was able to fit 80 plus bouts in his run, Manny is getting to the 60 mark, not sure he has 20 plus bouts to make it to the 80 mark.
Even as a Pacquiao fan, I rank Ross well clear of Manny. Barney's resume is significantly stronger. For me, Ross ranks anywhere between 9th and 14th, whereas Pacquiao is probably just inside the top 30-35.
Yes, of course there are more weightclasses but Pac still went from Fly to Welter, Ross did not. That´s something he has over Ross. Ross has more bouts that´s true and probably will end up with more in the end too but I think Pac is longer active at the top but I maybe wrong there.
Pac hasn't done enough yet. But if he beats the winner of ortiz/floyd he's gotta be knocking on the door. He'll have dominated from flyweight up to welterweight. That is am amazing legacy. Over 12 years only one man would beat him and he went on to twice knock him out.
Manny Paq is a great modern fighter. No doubt about it.A sharp aggressive puncher, with the advantage of being a southpaw, makes him a difficult opponent for most anyone. However,Pac hasn't met as good a crop of fighters in their primes,as Ross did beating Tony Canzoneri, Jimmy McLarnin, and the underated Billy Petrolle, who Ruby Goldstein in answer to a question from me, opinionated would have licked Carmen Basilio at even weights, in his opinion. I think Barney Ross beating the 8 pound heavier,Dynamic bolo punching Ceferino Garcia THREE times, once with a damaged right hand, was Ross's greatest accomplishment. After all, Garcia who kod 68 opponents in 103 wins, amongst them Fred Apostoli and Lloyd Marshall, two top middleweights ,made Garcia a tough opponent for any welterweight. So until Pac ,takes on Sergio Martinez, and beats him [very doubtful], I'll string along with Barney Ross....
Anybody putting Pacquiao above Barney Ross should be tarred, feathered and leave this forum in disgrace!!! :yep Pac has a great resume; but Barney went the extra mile with legendary battles against Canzonieri, McLarnin, and Garcia. Even Ross´ ultimate defeat to Armstrong has the stuff of legends and make him shine even brighter, with a stubborn Ross who just didn´t quit regardless the brutal beating.
I just seeing, I going to let this run 3 days before I put my next fighter up in my top ten. I doing this fighter at a time, instand of just thowing Pac in the top ten. I not saying Pac cant make it, he has a shot, but I cant see putting him over the fighters I pick in my top ten. Ross is in my top 5 imo. Of couse I may just skip the Pac vs Robinson,/Armstrong thing. Because they are pretty much 1 or 2.
And I would have thought it was beating the bigger McLarin in the first and 3rd fights, or out boxing Tony in fight 2 would be Ross' biggest accomplishment, of couse I did see these fights and was impress with Ross in how he handle them.
D, I cite Ross beating Ceferino Garcia 3 times , more so than Barney Ross beating McLarnin ,soley because Garcia was a legit middleweight, whilst McLarnin, was a small welterweght, though superior to the larger Ceferino Garcia...Barney Ross in his victory over Garcia, fought with only his left-hand as his right hand was HURT before the bout and the brave Ross, would not cancel the bout...Barney ross was certainly not the greatest boxer of all-time, but he was the bravest, in and out of the squared circle...Cheers...
Yeah, I think his wins over Garcia stand a bit in the shadows of his McLarnin and Canzoneri wins. Those are three nice jewels he has in his crown. It would be like beating Martinez three times, just better, for Pac. McLarnin and Canzi were greater and better fighter than Garcia no doubt but Garcia was bigger and a very good puncher even at mw. You could also make the argument that he is 1-1 with Canzoneri - as a huge Canzi fan I´ve got that - so going 3-0 against a not as great but bigger and harder puncher in Garcia is IMO nearly up there with going 2-1 against Jimmy and 1-1 against Tony.
Pacquiao would have to beat Mayweather (barring an Ortiz loss) to even argue this rationally and even then I wouldn't argue it. A win over Mayweather at welterweight and Martinez in the middleweight division, that would make the argument quite strong, really, even if you didn't ultimately agree with it. It wouldn't be the better fighters than Ross defeated, but the accomplishments would put him over the edge, imo. Linear Flyweight, Featherweight, then Welterweight and Middleweight world champion? (I'd assume if he fought and defeated Mayweather after the Ortiz fight, Mayweather would be ranked number 2 and Pac number 1). I am 99% sure that the Martinez fight would never happen though, and have only small hope that Mayweather/Pac will come off.
Barney Ross should be much higher than Pac for the following reasons: 1. Barney Ross has a better resume not just in names but also considering the timing in which he beat the guys he did. Unlike when Pac beat Morales, DLH (and arguably Hatton and Barrera too), Ross was beating most of the good names on his resume WHILST they were at or near their peak. To add further to that, unlike Pac who is made out to be a midget beating giants, Ross was actually outweighed at the TIME of his fights, weighing around the lightweight limit or jr welterweight limit whilst kicking welterweight and super welterweight ass. 2. Robberies and bull**** decisions aside, Barney Ross has shown a better level of dominance than Pac. He basically has one loss during his prime (to McLarnin by split dec.). Pac has the Morales deafeat and 2 questionable fights with Marquez (imo he should have clearly won the first fight, but a lot of people don't feel that way). 3. Barney Ross's longevity is better than Pac's at the moment. 4. I would rate Ross's character above Pac's in the sense that (a) he has been willing to take more risks than Pac (no ducking or avoiding fighters along the way or fighting guys at their lowest ebb) and (b) he overcame and got the best of his nemesis McLarnin (Pac has yet to do so against Marquez) and (c) he has beared up well to adversity by showing that he can take a beating like he did against Armstrong but still fight back. Those stories about Armstrong holding Ross up for two thirds of the fight are pure bull****, as anyone that watches the fight can attest to. Pac is not close to Ross imo. Right now, I don't think I'd have Pac in the top 50 all time. A win against Mayweather MAY change that, depending on how sharp Floyd looks and how dominant a display Pac puts on. Should Mayweather show up at 80% of what he was in his prime (i.e. current Floyd) and Pac dominates him, I'm not certain he'd move up all that much in the p4p stakes. Should Floyd show even more deterioration, then it's very hard to see him moving up much from that win. That said, I'd probably still edge an 80% Floyd to beat Pac right now, considering Manny has shown a few signs of slipping himself....
