That isn't a slip that is using footwork to guide the fighter out of the way of the punch. Sugar Ray Robinson was very good at doing this as it was his chief line of defense. I believe you addressed lower body movement in one of your threads recently.
Good lower body movement is good upper body movement done correctly. I've been working with Miguel Diaz lately an old man over 80 who has worked with 24 champions. He tells me one day he had a realization that fighters with boulders for shoulders must step since the shoulders are thick and tiresome to move. Shortly afterwards he was made trainer of the year 1999 and was inducted into the hall of fame in 2008. His realization came we he trained Erik Morales who was a ko artist but had problems with defense. This is when Miguel taught Erik to jab then step and punch. So the combo Miguel taught me was to jab, step right and fire off the right-cross. Another fighter is Marcos Maidana who has problems fighting angled fighters like mayweather and broner. Instead of slipping w/out moving the feet, Maidana now steps to slip.. What Miguel calls perpetual motion. Freddie roach w/cotto https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=24oHy0UvfMw
There are always exceptions but I think the general definition is to dodge a punch without moving the feet. Beginners are going to be taught that and if there are problems they will be adjusted down the road.
Luis Ortiz has approached Freddie because of his lack of mobility in the shoulders even smaller fighters like rigondeaux are requesting to learn Freddie's style of slipping called the little roach slip.
Miguel Diaz, is not a trainer he is a cutman. He does have experience but his forte is working the cuts. I used to use him for cuts until he got mad cos I wouldn't use him as a trainer for a fighter I have.
Trainer for Marcos Maidana and 1999 coach of the year https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/FutchCondon_Award
Diaz biggest accomplishment was Diego Corrales. Diaz works with fighters all over the world it's odd that he'd train your fighter unless your fighter went to see him at his gym in LV or PR. Then he'd want to train him, Diaz was a co-trainer for mayweather in the developing years. Also coach for Diego corrales but works as a cutman as well. One thing that Diaz is good at is knowing the limitations of fighters. He hates pads because he doesn't believe in them, since pads are designed primarily for upper body movement. Maidana was pad trained before his fight with mayweather this according Miguel, trained Marcos to stand in front of mayweather and throw weak punches in combination. He agreed with me that pads teach fighters to square up and his example of that was Maidana who complained of not being able to move in his fight with broner had he the ability he would have stopped broner.
This is 17yrs later and he still is better known as a cutman not a trainer. Maidana, has a trainer from Argentina, who hooked up with Miguel who is also from Argentina.
My fighter is with Top Rank and Miguel works out of the Top Rank gym. I used Miguel plenty of times as a cutman. He tried training my guy, he got mad at me cos I wouldn't let him train him. So I have first hand knowledge of him. Miguel is getting old, he has a lot of knowledge but is limited cos of his age.
