stamina, power , speed , you can practce technique , anaerobic fitness , punch output, qulity of shots, everything bar gettin hit and timing
That depends how you use it. Perhaps it's easier to list the things it doesn't do so you can work out what it doesn't help for. It doesn't hit back and it doesn't move around much :think
I more and more start to dislike heavy bag exercise. I developed my power plenty. It's okay for stamina and technique, but no one makes you pay if your technique is sloppy or if you rest for a moment. Padwork is a lot more effective because you apply your technique, power etc while at the same time using footwork a bit and your coach can hit you back if you're getting sloppy. It's such a damn shame that you can't spar too much, because that's so much more effective an exercise than every other one.
I love banging the heavybag, alot better than the focus mitts. The heavybag helps you build stamina, power, and handspeed, if used properly. I owe most of my progress to the heavybag, Zelenoff gives it a bad name.
Point well taken, though his form on the heavybag was sad to say the least, no gloves, no wraps, throwing wild punches from left field, didnt set up his punches behind the jab, terrible arc/techinique on his hooks, everything you shouldnt do. After what I seen in the one video, I'm glad the heavybag hit back.:yep
I often try to incorporate movement, shelling up, feints, head movements and good solid foot work, also I'll imagine a jab is coming at me and ill slip inside and out. I get warmed up pretty slow it takes 3-4 rounds for a few beads of sweat to starty drippen, it good to practice good defense and movement. As you build your overall wind more flurries and better power will come along with combos.
The heavy bag is ONE tool of training before you are ready to spar used in conjuction with the peanut bag and the two end bag and shadowboxing in the mirror. you spar to find your weaknesses and to get used to having to think while being puched at
